The Olympics stand for peace between nations?

Wtf then did the armed forces raise the Olympic flag.<doh>

Ironic, seeing as the original Olympic truce was between the various Greek city states - Athens, Sparta, Argos etc. that would halt any fighting in a bid to honour the gods (Zeus and Hera in particular) through sporting excellence.

Saying that, they did all fit between games for control of the sanctuary at Olympia, so maybe it's not too far off.

The tributes to WW1, WW2 and the tribal dance about life and death (think it was about Tibet) were fitting however.

Such patriotic bullshit, sycophantic rubbish.

Sure, I like Britain. I like freedom of speech, representation, free press, democracy (well...), peace and relative well-being.

That is nothing to do with clapping and praising an outdated symbol of the past who is so removed from normal life she can't claim to be from the same PLANET as us mere mortals.

Bollocks to her. When will we join the modern age and have an elected head of state? They would do just as much charity work and so on as the Queen does - and it's not like she has a choice to do it or not, and they'd also be a meaningful, powerful figure.

In fact, we don't even need a 'president' so to speak - the Prime Minister has power domestically and over foreign affairs that a president would LOVE to have.

It's a joke, a sad joke that's gone on for so long that we've forgotten to laugh.

Well said revolution i totally agree with you mate. they certainly are a symbol of the past its time they were given their P45's from UK Plc

Off-topic question though, does anyone here (assuming we are all welsh) actually know the British national anthem word for word? Interested to know.

Sex pistols was played, think it was pretty vacant though!

Most people dont give a toss about the Queen and her hangers on and i bet there were many hoping her parachute would fail to open ..<laugh>

I thought the opening ceremony was fantastic, the hoisting of the forged Olympic rings from the Industrial age setting was spectacular and something that nobody else will be able to follow EVER !!
That will be an Iconic moment in Olympic History for sure.

The Olympic Cauldren was also quite a superb site to behold, we should be proud that we can as a country still pull off great things now and again, we may not have the money and sheer volume of workers like other countires but we certainly have great vision, design and creativity. These have been the key subjects that have made us a great country,it was nice to be reminded that we as a country still have alot of postive qualities, well done to Danny Boyle for creating a wonderful spectical .

I thought the ceremony was excellent to be fair but by God the Queen was a right old misery guts. Not one smile from her.

I think most people do like the Monarchy, especially the younger royals. The anti-royalists just air their views more often.

The Queen could have looked a bit more interested, admittedly, but she is getting on a bit.
