I'm of the understanding that all good things come to an end.

After a knighthood, a man of peace title, a nomination for nobel peace prize, and making love to Africa, is it not time for Geldof to **** off?

That's on a par with suggesting that Terry Geraghty's Christmas card is the official Labour Party one here.

She's just some no mark local politician in Nevada,

And it's been discussed for the last two pages since it was first posted anyway.

She is just a state Representative I think in Nevada like OLM says. It's more important than OLM infers as she does have power over gun control but just at the state level. When you think how many millions of people that includes it's a little scary and Nevada does have pretty weak gun control laws.

They dont think of it as bad publicity towards guns, they think of it as this is proof that people need MORE guns. They say all the time that if everyone had a gun on them these things wouldnt happen and they said the same thing about Paris. You are looking at it from a gun control is good point of view, try to pretend that you think that having guns is the only thing stopping your country from turning into 1984.

I've read that the US has a lot of guns in private hands, but that could mean one person having hundreds. What percentage of individuals currently have guns in America?

If it's a high percentage, doesn't the argument about more making it safer fall over?

Depending on whom you believe we have anywhere from around 270,000,000 guns in private hands to 500,000,000 guns in private hands with 49% of households owning guns. So there is anywhere from just about a gun per man, woman and child to almost 2 guns per man, woman and child in private hands. There are 123 million households in the US so at 49% that means there are 60,270,000 homes in the US that have guns. So yes many people do have a lot of guns anywhere from almost 5 to around 8. There are people who have 100s of guns but they are in the minority and probably dont effect the numbers in any statistically significant way. A minority of people actually say they own guns 29% and that is because people like my girl would answer that they dont own a gun, yet I own guns so even though she would say she didnt there are actually guns in our house.

What you might actually be asking is how many people "open carry" guns or have concealed gun permits. Because even though I have guns, it isnt like I carry them around town so if there was a mass shooting it isnt like I could do anything about it. There are 12.8 million people in the US that have concealed gun permits and carry guns on them around town. The majority of those will of course be in rural areas, and many will be retired cops so the places that mass shootings tend to occur do not have a high % of the population that has concealed gun permits. Thats how the NRA argues that point, they say if everyone had a concealed firearm then everything would be unicorns and rainbows.

You were spot on with what I was trying to ask.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply, it makes some of the stuff I read clearer.

I find it strange that you say the majority of 'concealed' gun carriers - licenced or not - will be in rural areas, why is that, any idea? I know some states issue a licence that covers both open and concealed carrying, but not the majority, so why would rural folk, who use a weapon as a daily tool, conceal them more than city dwellers who don't? The whole argument comes across as contrived and illogical, something that a little accuracy with the data would show to be false.

Are there rules on concealed gun permits? Can you take your gun down to the pub? I could see that turning into trouble. There's a few people I would hve shot if I'd had a gun at the boozer <laugh>

I think if I told you the earth orbited the sun that you would tell me I was wrong.

Almost every state can "open carry" a gun. Sometimes I go to the store and a dude will have an assault weapon on his back, its not illegal as he is carrying it in the open. That doesn't take any sort of license. Every state has licenses to carry concealed firearms (or have no restrictions so no license is needed) so you are just incorrect in your assumption that there are states that do not allow it (there used to be some but laws change as in the are tossed out by the courts). No state denies it, there are degrees to the difficulty as the map shows but the most restricted the "May Issue" states all allow it such as Cali where I live.

Carrying a gun concealed takes a license the difficulty in getting that varies by state as that sort of thing is covered by state gun laws. Someone carrying a gun concealed, without a license would be illegal (in almost every state) and not in the 12.8 numbers which only refer to guns carried legally, concealed by people who have licenses to do so. The reason that you have far more people who have those licenses in rural areas is gun culture. Rural areas (and regions such as the south or mid west) tend to be very more pro gun than cities (such as LA, SF, NY, Chicago etc) as such those who get licenses to carry them concealed tend to be rural people or those who have a history of carrying guns on them such as retired cops. There are far more guns in rural hands than hands in the city.

There are rules and they vary by the state. A business does have some rights in restricting people from carrying guns into them but that varies by state as well. There are Federal rules to that cover carrying concealed guns into Federal buildings such as Post offices etc. Plenty of people carry guns into bars/pubs there are even NFL stadiums (in Texas) where you are allowed to carry a concealed gun. The university I went to back east in Virginia allows people to carry guns concealed or in the open while on campus for instance. You will be sitting in class and the dude next to you will have a gun on them.

I should say that carrying a gun legally doesn't give you the right to scare people with it. If you threaten anyone with it, pretend to take it out in a threatening manner, say you will etc that will get you arrested quickly.
