This is a fair point - and clubs in general do have a lot to answer for in regard to the circus that contracts are becoming in football. Ultimately though, a club cannot sell a player unless they find a willing buyer - and then they have to pay players compensation (I believe, could be wring though). My understanding of long term contracts as they are supposed to be used is - it provides a player with a guaranteed income (usually an absolutely astronomical one, but i wont go into that as i could go on all day) and it provides the club assurances that the player is tied to them for a certain amount of time. What really pishes me off, is when players are at a club they know they could move on from, know they arent in for the long haul, and choose to negotiate a ridiculous salary just for the sake of being that little bit more stinking rich for a year before they appear on newspapers crying about how they are being 'mistreated and being forced to play against their will.' As far as I am concerned, that is akin to pulling down your pants and sticking your a*** in every fan's face - cos through sky bills, rising ticket prices, paying to use the services of those who sponsor the club, etc etc, these are the poor sods who have had to pay even more of their desposable income so that you can have another holiday in the bahamas and another Zonda. Many of these people would work for satan himself for a tenth of what you are earning. Now I wouldn't object to a top player commiting himself to a top third premierleague team and being paid more than the rest of their team. The best player should get the best salaries, I get that. What I do object to, massively, is a top player signing a contract in good faith for 5 years, taking the salary that the club were willing to offer under the assumption that the player will be there for 5 years, then using his mates and the media to back the club into letting him go. If he wasn't sure, he should have stuck it out on his meagre salary, managed with just the 17 cars and 33 mansions, told liverpool that he appreciated everything theyd done but that he couldnt guarantee hed want to stay for 5 years but hed be willing to stay to help them attempt to reach the champions league for one more season, and then asked to leave. I dont work for |Liverpool, nor any other club, but surely theyd have been more understanding then? EDIT: I am aware my rant could have applied to just about any player at just about any club, not just suarez and liverpool. I am also aware that I am living in a dreaworld. However I am most aware that I will not be taking my sons to any premierleague games when they are old enough to, as the players and the clubs they represent are the epitomy of everything I hope my sons will never become. And as somebody whos first experiences of football were going with my dad and brothers to my local side since I was 7, thats a pretty sad thought.
Generally, from a legal standpoint, NDA (non-disclosure agreements) are clauses in contracts that specify that the player is not allowed to divulge certain information. Both parties must make REASONABLE, solid efforts to keep this information secure. Leaking it to the media, for example, would not be reasonable. However, Liverpool don't care at this point. They don't want to breach and nullify the contract. 1. If Arsenal try to sign Suarez from information gathered by Suarez leaking the documents, we can ask for Suarez's contract to be nullified (in breach of a NDA - providing it exists) and for him to pay us damages to the tune of his transfer fee, etc. (This isn't likely as he will most likely file for bankruptcy, plus the club isn't vindictive like that.) 2. If Arsenal try to sign Suarez from information directly from the player, it is tapping up and they could be fined for that.
