League 2 Champions - John Lyall Championship Play Off Winners - George Burley 5th In the Premiership under George Burley Qualified for the UEFA Cup
they finished 5th under burley, i know that! interesting question though exile. after burley, i doubt its very high but then neither is ours without walker, stringer and brown!
So in the Norwich "history" where do people like Ron Saunders and John Bond fit in the general scheme of things?
not sure what i can say! both before my time warky but i think saunders led us to promotion and bond two league cup finals so pretty decent! under their guidance we spent plenty of time in the top flight but not sure we ever really 'challenged' for anything league wise.
Thanks for that, I'd forgotten about Lyall. As I said, I know it sounded wummy, but I really didn't know. Just goes to put the achievements of Sir Alf and Sir Bobby into greater perspective.
burnley, tottenham, ipswich, everton, liverpool, manchester united, manchester city & leeds united all won the title in the 60s. 8 different teams in a decade!! its not the same game these days... i wish it was!! everyone and anyone had a chance with good management
Exactly Supers and that's why we bang on about it so much I guess! I have had the privilege of witnessing a very special era at my club that will never be repeated (I doubt) in my lifetime. I wasn't born when we won the League Championship but I have been there for everything else. I appreciate what your saying about it all being ancient history but even you will surely realise that for a little club like ours to win the league title at the first time of asking is something a bit special and should be celebrated. Im not debasing your clubs achievements although they are minor in comparison. We both support football clubs that serve their communities and represent our part of the world in the best possible way.
Like Superman, long before my time, but as far as I know, Saunders took us up to the top flight for the first time (as champions) and I think the league cup final. Bond again produced a league cup final and promotion (though after relegation) but I've no idea where the club finished in the league during their periods in charge. Highest finishes were under Brown, Stringer and Walker, 5th, 4th (old first division), 3rd (Premier league), and Brown also won the league cup. All of those of course (other than third) came under the european ban, without that, who knows. Actually, I think the ban came in after we'd won the league cup in '85, so we had briefly qualified before it was taken away... not sure though.
true exile. we missed out on four years of european football. who knows, maybe we'd have a uefa cup of our own! i bet we'd have been able to sign even better players during that time so we'd certainly have been able to challenge the likes of liverpool and everton more consistently
The ban had to happen of course, but we were certainly hit particularly hard by it. What might have been, eh? The chance of adding real quality to the sides we had then, particularly under Stringer. That could have produced something special. Oh, well.
