On this day 2 years ago: “Romelu Lukaku scored his 100th Premier League goal as Manchester United strengthened their grip on second place and dented Swansea's survival hopes. Lukaku gave United an early lead when he collected Alexis Sanchez's pass to fire in with the aid of a deflection. Sanchez's crisp strike soon doubled the advantage - only his second league goal for United - as the hosts dominated. Swansea improved after the break, Tammy Abraham twice denied by David de Gea, but United were always in control. Jose Mourinho's side re-opened a two-point gap over third-placed Liverpool, who won 2-1 at Crystal Palace earlier on Saturday. Swansea stay three points clear of the relegation zone, but drop down a place to 15th.”

The French striker netted in each half, while Ki Sung-Yueng was also on target as the Swans moved to within a point of their record Premier League total of 47 with seven games remaining. After a closely fought opening to the contest, Garry Monk’s side edged their noses ahead in the 18th minute. Following a patient build-up, Allan McGregor could only parry Jonjo Shelvey’s long-range effort straight into the path of Ki, who made no mistake from close range. The Swans doubled their lead 19 minutes later when Robbie Brady failed to clear Kyle Naughton’s header back into the Hull box, and Gomis unleashed a fierce acrobatic volley into the roof of the net. please log in to view this image The visitors responded five minutes after the break as Brady’s in-swinging free-kick from the right was turned home by Paul McShane in the six-yard box. Within two minutes, Lukasz Fabianski did brilliantly to deny Michael Dawson and Dame N’Doye from close range as the Tigers sought the equaliser. However, they faced an uphill task when David Meyler was shown a straight red card just 60 seconds later for a high challenge on Naughton. And with Hull pushing as the clocked ticked into stoppage time, the Swans broke away to seal the points. Following a well-timed Nathan Dyer challenge, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s long clearance released Gomis, who raced clear before delicately lifting the ball over the advancing McGregor.

On this day 5 years ago, cricketing legend Richie Benaud passed away. I had the pleasure of hearing Benaud speak at a dinner in the Brangwyn Hall in the 1990s. An Aussie who was liked in the U.K. despite being an Ashes winning Captain!
