With all the shocking news coming out of Barcelona, I thought I'd share some personal good news.

My youngest is 18 today and on top of that, he's learned that he's off to University in Southampton come September.

Well done lad!!!!
(18?!! How the **** did that happen?).

Congrats Col. My son goes there. He is half way through a four year Physics degree. He absolutely loves it.

Congratulations Col Jnr.

I hope Col Snr is ready with the £9K fees per annum.

My eldest son graduated this year & is back home with nearly £40K debt
Luckily he has a job to go to in Sept.

Congratulations to Col's son and Stan's daughter. My son got his 'A' level results this time last year and did a short-term disappearing act because he was so disappointed with his results (2 Bs and a C). More likely he didn't know how to tell his parents, who had expectation of better grades - he was predicted 2 As and a B. It didn't really matter that much to him, though, because he never really wanted to go to Uni. He wants to learn programming and has got himself a good Apprenticeship position where he can continue to learn whilst earning a few quid.

I was at Southampton University, Col, many moons ago. Great place, loved it. Glen Eyre Hall my first year, then moved out with friends to become more independent. Please pass on my hearty congratulations to your son!

My lad did the same seems like a lifetime ago, but only 3 years. He's been looking after himself and working ever since, recognised that Uni wasn't for him as soon as he started visiting mates who went. Like your lad he has the grades to go any time he wants, ponders it this time every year, then decides against. Good for them.

£9K that's nothing. My son is about to start his 3rd year at American University in Washington DC. Fees are $53,000/year including nothing. And I know it will be a complete waste of money.

Why didn't he go in the state where you live? Much cheaper I understand.
