Once again showing how managers can do more harm than good. We have the quality they just need the freedom to show it.
But it's not just me, is it? There are tens of thousands of Spurs fans who think the same way. Sure, he's done well today, but his history - and not just with us - shows that, after a while, he stops trying, that he's something of a luxury player. Or are tens of thousands of Spurs - and other - fans wrong about that?
Great result. I thought the Adebayor/Soldado combination looked promising and if Soldado keeps getting chances like that he'll start putting them away. Still not sure about that midfield lineup but I guess it worked today. Lloris badly needs some confidence back.
I said at the start of the game that if the game became chaotic that I felt we could come out on top. In the end Southampton weren't using their more organised set up to really put us to it and we(/Ade) exploited them expertly.
So today we were missing Kaboul, Vertonghen, Sandro, Naughton, Paulinho, Lennon, Townsend and Dembele went off injured. People can talk about our signings being flops if they want but there aren't many sides that can cope with 8 injuries/suspensions better.
Let's not get carried away, though, eh, lads. In truth, that game could have gone either way. And let's not forget, this is Saints we're talking about, not £ity. Had that team been playing £ity today they've have ripped us another new arsehole. Let's be honest about this. Sure, it's a good start, and you can only beat the team that's in front of you, but we still leaked two goals, and it could have been a lot more than that, had Lloris been up against the likes of Goofy or Aguero. Let's see where we are under Sherwood come February, and then decide whether or not he has what it takes to lead the players, or whether this was simply the case of the players putting in a shift to piss all over AVB's legacy in charge.
Seems unlikely, doesn't it? All those players that were a problem under AVB all end up injured and suspended for the first league match with a new manager
"Let's see where we are under Sherwood come February" Yep. FA Cup NLD and the PL return games against the Mancs.
Best Spurs performance (over 2 halves) of the season for me, both in terms of the result away against a very good Southampton team and the actual football which was good to watch for the most part. For me, we were looking a little like City - two wide players who might normally be known as attacking midfielders getting involved in the play, two strikers playing each other in on goal and alternating pulling wide. We looked slightly different in the middle but if we're going to persist with this setup (which on the basis of this performance we should) then we could perhaps move Eriksen to Sig's position and then play a more defensive midfielder which might help shore up the defensive aspect of our game, which was shoddy. Lloris looked uncertain behind his centrebacks and I think that could be why he came out for the second goal, he didn't perhaps trust Dawson so he came out unnecessarily. Plenty to improve on but you can't look past the win and the vast improvement on the entertainment front IMO. IF Sherwood will play exciting lineups and good football like that every game then I'm perfectly willing to accept him. Today was almost like having the old Spurs back.
"How the **** did he know that?" Sherwood may think he is the man, but we all know who is really calling the starting XI shots now.
Offensively today we looked better for sure. Having two strikers brings a whole load more out of Soldado who should have scored at least once today. If Adebayor would consistently put in those performances week in week out, we;d forgive him but we all know his temperament. Pretty shaky at the back. Rose clearly is in need of games and was off the pace. there was a bit too mud over playing and back heels for some unknown reason. It's a start but as others have pointed out, a quality side would have torn that defence apart.
I thought Chadli looked pretty decent on the right. First time we've seen him there. Anyone else agree?
Am I the only one that thought Rose was good? He got caught out on no more ocassions than Chiriches and actually won quite a few important headers and interceptions. He got forward well too. Edit: Yeah, I thought Chadli was good too.
