The Bob Beamon triple jump record was truly amazing , stayed a record for many years (over twenty years I think) till some guy broke it by 5 centimetres and that record stands to this day ( more than20 years ) .Bob Beamon's tripe jump was a jaw dropper . ,

You two did .
I stated my opinion , you guys said it was basically wrong .

Nobody said you were wrong! They just offered a different opinion, like I did above. It would be a boring world if we agreed with everything. I do think Ali was a great athlete, but it came from going pro, the catalyst for that was probably the Olympics. I weren't an itch in my dad's pants when that happened so all I can go on is the history books.

Ali was a great sportsman there's no doubt about it, but he earned his greatness when he turned pro imo, he was a legend. But in the Olympics I think those worthy are above. I would say that Daley Thompson should be at the top as well, winning the decathlon in two Olympics is remarkable, let's not forget they do 10 different events for this.

Agree. If Jess Ennis wins the gold here she'd go above Ali for me too, especially as she's come back after having a baby.

Jonathan Edwards, another you can to the list.

"Over a lifetime , Cassius Clay is the most famous Olympian ."

No he's a famous person who happened to be an Olympian early in his career. Phelps & Owens embody the Olympian spirit and are famous because of them. Big difference.

Ali's achievements were remarkable but the Olympics was only a small part of what he did.
I gave my opinion , Aussie quoted it and the first words out of his mouth were " No"
Give your opinion without saying " No " to someone else's and I'm good .

Ali wasn't famous for being an Olympian. He was famous for being one of/the greatest boxer of all time.

Bolt on the other hand for example, is probably the most famous Olympian because of what he DID/GOING to do in the Olympics.

ffs Roof. <doh>

"No" = a negative. It means nothing more than "No, I disagree". There is no right or wrong on a subject like this, it's an opinion. People will disagree. If you can't handle being disagreed with this isn't the place for you.

Who is the " Greatest Olympian " .... Muhammad. Ali. , his legacy is unreachable IMFO .
Now you guys fill your boots on your opinions and I'll enjoy reading them .
Ali may not have the impact in " The Olympics " as a lot have with their multi medals but his " Legecy " makes him the" Greatest Olympian " ....just not the guy with the most medals .
Watching Ali light the flame in Atlanta was my favorite .

His Olympic legacy is 1 gold medal.
Phelps legacy for example - 22 gold medals.

Phelps will be remembered for 22 Olympic golds.
Ali will be remembered as the greatest heavyweight champion of all time.

Well done for not using the word 'no', Valley. It sets him off apparently. <laugh>

Fair point by the way. The debate isn't 'who is the most famous sportsman' it's 'who is the greatest Olympian'.

As my old English teacher used to say "Read the bloody question!" <laugh>

The thing about Ali is that he wasn't the greatest boxer in the Olympics, you go on the number of medals won, and he won just the single medal. Others did more in the Olympics. Does that lesson what he did professionally? Of course not, I would think a fair number of boxers in the Olympics actually has him somebody to emulate.

You go to the amount of medals won , I don't .
I go to anyone who is an " Olympian " , even if he hasn't won a medal and follow his or her life .
Then I come up with " The Greatest Olympian " .. But that's me , I respect everyone else's opinion , but only believe my own , like most people .

What's "A Bong"?

The clue is in the question and Roof's approach is flawed. It's not 'Who is the greatest sportsman that was also an Olympian'. The actual question implies performances during Olympics - possibly more than one Olympics. If you come at the question from the wrong angle you're going to find your conclusion a bit .....off. <ok>

You lost me at " Implies " , I come at opinions at whatever angle I believe , regardless of the masses ." Who is the Greatest Olympian " that is what I was answering , IMO
Doesn't say " Who won the most medals in the Olympics " ... If it was, I'd have a different answer .

Nothing to do with the 'masses'. Different opinions are to be welcomed. I get Owens. I get Daly, even if I disagree. I don't get Ali at all because you're clearly answering the wrong question.

It's like answering the question "Which is the greatest male Wimbledon Champion of all time?" with "Olga Korbut". <laugh>

The Olympics was incidental to Ali's career. With others it was at their core because that's where they achieved the most.

But he was in the Olympics once, so yes an Olympian, but there are others who have had far more impact on the games than him, for example Bolt has been huge and this is his third Olympics where I have no doubts he will gain at least another 2 golds, possibly 3 . Winning in the Olympics is what makes someone an Olympian, he holds five more golds than Ali right now

I don't care if you don't " Get Ali " , means somewhere between little and nothing .
And your comparison with Wimbledon and Olga is beyond stupid ..
Olga ....
