Typical, if enough people said "where will we park" etc to warrant a stand-up comedian making jokes about it, then that says a hell of a lot more about The Olympics than it does about those people.
The irony is lost on you....listen to what he says. He is making a point about the ignorance and selfish nature of the English not the organisation of the Olympics. Which as he says is repeated here. Remember this was at least four years ago.
i do actually have more interest in where i'll park than watching bulgarian women weight lifters. but thats not why i nay'd.
I have always thought that an Olympic Island should be created. It could be somewhere with the perfect climate for summer sports, with the terrain and landscape to cover the whole spectrum of events. At other times it can be used for training, youth development and other competitions within the different sporting fields. With a perfect transport and leisure infrastructure in place, it would operate with the minimum of fuss and disruption to normal city dwellers. It would be a shame to see the Olympics no longer staged around the world, but perhaps it is the way to go.
Don't count on Greece. That's now a second home for the Germans. Don't give it to the yanks or the Chinese cos no country would turn up. It has to go around the globe but the IOC could do a lot more to help finance the games.
Dunno, SIG - you could get a couple of them to actually lift your car into any space you came across...
I voted ney, not because I hate how much it costs/travel problems/i'm just a negitive person, it just doesn't appeal to me. For those who like it, it will be amazing, but that won't make me anymore interested, in the same way cricket, pop music and the only way is essex doesn't interest me. As far as travel goes I do hope it makes my train trip longer, means more time to catch up on comics/my drawing...so long as I get a seat
Reminds me of the best April Fool i saw last week, when one of the papers had stated that because there were now more Germans in Majorca than Spanish that Spain had decided to sell the island to Germany to cancel out its National debt.
I was going to post this on my website tomorrow (sendawaythetigers.co > check it!) but this started out as an article on the hosepipe ban then into a lament on the olympics then into a marriage proposal to Jessica Ennis - YOU CAN HAVE FIRST PEEK, HOPE YOU ENJOY... Summertime is here and there is nothing I like more than nurturing my Pogonias. They’re prize winning you know. My lovely little lilac lovelys. Last summer I spent hours upon hours with them. Whilst London was burning I was rushing home from work to feed and nourish my Pogonias. So imagine my disgust now that every time I look out of my window I can see them wilting. Dying. Dead. All because there’s a Hosepipe Ban. Yes a Hosepipe ban. Even though we are an Island country. Literally surrounded by the stuff. Apparently Thames Water lose a third of all of their water due to their old-fashioned infrastructure that you always see them not working on out in the street. This basically means that there’s not enough water to save my plants but there is enough for Mrs. Windsor to float her boats as she celebrates 60 years of being a D-lister in June. So with my plants now dead what am I to do all summer? Oh yes. The Olympics. Now I’ve done some research and can I just shock you? The exact amount of Water that it takes to feed an Olympic size Swimming Pool is just about enough to water my Pogonias. It’s political correctness gone mad. But there are other reasons that I’m not keen on The Olympics. Although I’ve done no research it sounds right to say they cost too much at a time when Hospitals are being sold and Libraries closed. The legacy also worries me. It’s clear that the Stadium (which is a lovely piece of Art by the way) will never be used properly again. Little things like the temporary building on the notoriously Green-Belted Blackheath Common also irk. I’m put off by some of the sillier sports on offer too. Synchronised Swimming for example. What happens if one of them accidentally drowns? But the main reason I’m turned off by the Olympics is that I would absolutely hate to see my favourite Jessica Ennis in tears should she lose. That would mortify me. Yet Jessica may be literally a big turn-on on The Olympics. Alongside Usain Bolt (the best person in the human race) she has very much become the face of the Games. Ennis is a dabbler; she’ll do anything to win a medal, be it the Shotput, Javelin or even 110m Hurdles (which she is good at because she is mixed race). And whilst she plays to win she always does so with a smile. I have very little patriotism in me these days but to me she epitomises the British spirit and culture. So I will watch the Olympics. I will even trek the few short miles to watch them. I may even camp outside. With my Union Jack duvet. How else am I to give Jessica her Olympic Ring otherwise?
Erm! Just been out for a nice curry with my boy and come back in to catch up with a bit of banter on here. For the first time since I started posting on this board I can tell you that this has just crossed a line. In the space of a few hours I have been directly accused, with others, of being lazy, unpatriotic, hysterical, self absorbed and ignorant -- and an implication that I am racist. I'm sorry but I don't take to kindly to any of that. Old Ackers got banned for talking shyte but I don't remember him resorting to some pretty serious personal insults even by implication. A sad day for the board. Oh and while we are at it, the don't slag it till you've tried it argument is horse shyte. I've never had a ninety year old up the bum but I can tell you for sure that I don't like it!!!!! Sad day.
Your now being ageist and homophobic and a tiny bit sensitive!. But why do the few that are inconvenienced feel they are soo bloody important? Come on once in a lifetime event and your still moaning. Where's the Dunkirk spirit, the sense of national pride.
your missing the point, which is why i stopped replying. your calling people ignorant, racist etc with no reason or justification aside from that we have a point of view different to you. cant educate those who dont want to be educated.... you are just "typical".
Can't educate those who don't want to be educated absolutely right the ignorant never want to hear anything that does not benefit them . Nobody has been called racist. Nobody has been called anything other than what their post and view deserves. You can have a different view but back it up with clear cogent sustainable arguments not I won't be able to park my car crap. If you want an education about the olympics read 'you won't go home again" and "the amateurs" two of the most powerful stories about sport and personal sacrifice. Something posters on here will do well to note,
Nobody has been called racist. Nobody has been called anything other than what their post and view deserves. You can have a different view but back it up with clear cogent sustainable arguments not I won't be able to park my car crap. I let this one go overnight as I refused to post something in anger that I would later regret. I would nevertheless like to understand precisely which parts of my previous posts "deserve" personal abuse that clearly goes beyond reasonable banter. If that's the permissible standard on here then I will be bidding you all a fond farewell.
Then you pay for it T, I have absolutely no interest in watching people who just want to perform well to enhance their media income Other points - 1) In fact tourism is predicted to be down in 2012 due to the Olympics as tourists going elsewhere due to the disturbance caused by the circus; 2) Being anti Olympics is NOT being unpatriotic! What a ludicrous statement; 3) The fact that the Olympics will be a loss is pretty well known by people in the industry but will be hidden by the fact that certain costs (policing, army support and non-direct infrastructure projects) will be excluded in final costings. Did I apply for tickets? - NO, Have I ever supported them being hosted in London? NO Do I think they will be good for the Country? Your joking right? Who says 'I must go to Sydney because they did a splendid job with the Olympics? NOBODY! except perhaps you T?
Back to the poll - can't say I'm surprised that nay is winning, but it's closer than I thought. And I don't want to be difficult, but if you can't debate without resorting to insults then I will close the thread. Was going to do so last night, but thought I'd leave it till the morning to see how it's played out. Since someone has spoken of their disapproval, anymore and bye bye thread.
My final word. If people think that parking their cars is more important in their lives than an once in a lifetime event like the olympics then fine. They should howover take a long hard look at themselves and perhaps question why they want to make life difficult for the rest. Not only are they embarassing themselves but this country. AHH has expressed an umber of points that are factually incorrect, for the sake of balance lets put them right. Firstly, AHH says he has no interest in watching people enhance their media income. I have no idea what that means. Does he not pay at CAFC then? does he bunk into the theatre and dodge his license fee?. Very few olympians earn enough to supplement all their training needs. Many pay for themselves or through the goodwill of others. I think youll find over 90% of all competing at this years games work for a living. The prediction in Tourism is nonsensical. It is a prediction and not a fact. I notice tourism dropped dramaticallay during last seasons JD Sports Looting event. I woukld like to see figures after the fact please. If you did not want the Olympics there was a on-line poll. Did anyone vote against it? Did you lobby your MP? Vote UKIP? Its a bit late to moan about it now. Not supporting the Olympics is a bit unpatriotic dont you think? Rubbishing this nations attempt to show its sporting facilities and fine youth off to the world in favour off parking. It has yet to be proven that it is a loss and who is in the industry has said so? What does that mean? Specualtion and scaremongering. A whole area of london has been regenerated like holmbush in Sydney, Stratfford has come alive, The areas were both dumps and lives have been improved. The stadium in Sydney runs now at a profit and has been used for rugby and cricket world cups. The cycling and swimming trracks were handed over to local schools and produced outstanding athletes. 12 months after the Sydney games, Australia was hit by Sars and the collapse of a national airline as well as September 11th. Toursut numbers were down not as a result of the olympics but due to these events and soon picked up. Sydney has benefitted hugely with better transport and facilities. No evidence of them beind white elephants there. There are some things money can't buy...... Watching the graetest athletes of the age in you home town. The country united, remember the chants of Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi annoying but benefical to the feel good factor of a nation. The thrill of an olympics, meeting fans of a diffrenet culture and not bashing their heads in. Watchinmg diffrent sports and marvelling at the skill and passion for them. Giving the handicap and less abled the ability to compete and participate in front of the eyes of the world affording them dignity and self respect.....But some of you would rather be able to park your cars than give them that. Shame on you sports fans
you've focused on one off the cuff remark. i could focus on you.... and your disagreement that the £6.9b (fact) that's its already gone over budget should not be spent on making kids who are ill better. how could you say that, how could you do such a thing? whats wrong with you? are you a monster? its a totally nonsensical verdict of you. but its pretty much like you people bashing cos you read one sentence about parking and not reading the other 40 comments about expense, inconvenience and non-interest.
