Favourite moment from the Olympics: Anne Packer's 800metres win in Tokyo. I was very keen on Athletics then and in '62 or '63 remember a group of Athletes being interviewed on Sportsnight with Coleman as to their personal aspirations. When it got to Packer she said she only did it because she got to go on holiday to nice places with her boyfriend Robbie Brightwell. At that time she was a 200m runner I believe. In Tokyo she ran in the 800m which was either a new event or reintroduced event at those games, and qualified for the final as the UK's number two as I believe Ann Wilson was our chief hope. How the race was run suited her and she was able to use her sprinter's kick to go round the whole field. Sadly Robbie who was a bit of a big-head and one of our golden boys only got a silver in the relay. I loved her self-effacing manner and her guts when it came down to the real thing.
Loads of memories of British wins but 2 for my Antipodean friend that stand out: Mens Freestyle relay where Gary Hall said the Americans would smash the Aussies like guitars - and got taken in the last 10 metres by Ian thorpe and Cathy Freeman's 400 metres. Both amazing moments.
