To be fair, it wasn't a bad penalty, powerfully struck just the keeper guessed right. I'm hoping this amazing attendance may be the start of Women's Football getting the recognition it deserves, perhaps the England team playing in Wembley occasionally rather than lower league clubs like Leyton Orient and getting decent attendances too.
Enjoyed that game. Scoring so early could have made it a backs to thewall stuff, but it didn't. GB won and were the best team. Good to see such a strong defence.
Is anyone else going to the Uruguay game tomorrow? Don't worry, I will boo Suarez for all of you that aren't.
The girls deserved the win and could have won by more. Thoroughly enjoyed the game and the way that the girls seemed to enjoy themselves.
If people get offended by that they are looking to be offended. Nothing wrong with saying that Britons will always be free. We were taught at school that part of the argument against slavery was that the moment you set foot in Britain you were free anyway. Pity some foreigners don't realise that when they import their slaves here in the 21st century. There are many dreadful countries in the world, so I'm certainly not going to be ashamed to be British.
Does it? The FA are throwing £4m a season at the Womans Premier League and even by free entry to games, average attendance is around 500. Lets see if it increases after the Olympics, I somehow doubt it will. I wonder how many lower league professional clubs (well run ones) could do with FA assistance of that level?
Are Pompey's women part of PFC? Lowe severed the link between SFC and Southampton women. Shame as I think more integration with the professional clubs. A good game of womens football with competitiveness and quality on show can be just as engaging as the mens game. The lack of either on many occasions is more of an inditement of perceptions of the game rather than the women's ability to produce. Crap penalty btw, too close to the keeper. Female keepers are smaller than the men and they really should score penalties.
Didn't you see? I said hope, not will. Also do you mean the WSL not the Premier League? I wasn't aware that they had free entry. To be honest, I think that's 90% of the problem, awareness. I dunno about the WSL clubs but if you go onto the Portsmouth website, there's a section where they do match reports but there's very little practical information such as a squad page (most of the team I don't even know their first name!) or ground info or info about upcoming fixtures. I think it's not just the FA but also the clubs themselves that should do more to encourage fans to attend. Even something as simple as (again with Portsmouth) putting a link to the official team page if there is a specific website for the women's team. For example I have a programme from about 6 years ago and there's one whole page out of 90 about the women's team which is a series of questions with a (then) new signing for the team. Absolutely nothing else, no league tables, no match reports, no upcoming fixtures, no squad lists..... While it's good that the FA are taking a proactive approach, there needs to be more done by the clubs. Tell me, any Portsmouth fans who happen to read this, did you know Portsmouth Ladies were at one point last season were one game from winning the league? No? Well the club should have posted it everywhere and made people aware about it!!!!! Plus I'm pretty sure the attendances for certain clubs (i.e. Chelsea and Arsenal in particular) are well into the four figure mark. I'm not sure, they're mentioned on the Portsmouth website (they have a news section) but their crest is different and for their sake I hope they aren't linked financially.
Saints aren't skint though and promoting womens football would be a worthwhile use of a bit of cash. If anyone is going to raise the reputation of the womens' game, it will be the professional clubs by getting bums on seats.
I'd like to see a saints women's team given access to some of the men's coaching staff. Note to England and GB men's teams: This is how you perform in an international tournament.
I am on a coach to the Millennium Stadium for The GB game tonight, the last time was the Cup Final against Arsenal, so plenty of drinking to do again. I was listening to talk sport this morning and couldn't believe some Welsh people saying they will Boo the National Anthem. I really hope they are not near me as it will ruin a trip i have been looking forward to a long time And I no I want be able to express my feelings.
The matter of a ladies team was raised with Nicola soon after he took after. He laughed and said that he needed to sort out the mens team first. Doubt it will happen any time soon.
