The Telegraph sums up my thoughts really:

"Where Arsène Wenger once had a hungry young group of emerging talent to fall back on should his established first-team falter, this was evidence that the cupboard has become cluttered by too many failed signings.

The League Cup and dead-rubbers like this in the Champions League used to offer an exciting glimpse of the future and an opportunity for players like Cesc Fabregas, Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs to gather valuable senior experience. On Tuesday night, by contrast, was more notable for the rare sightings of Marouane Chamakh, Andrei Arshavin and Sebastien Squillaci, players Arsenal need off their wage-bill rather than back in first-team shirts.

No surprise, then, that they should collectively flunk another chance to redeem themselves. Chamakh was given a full 90 minutes but never looked like scoring what would have been his first Champions League goal in nearly two years.

Similarly, Arshavin produced only the most sporadic flash of the brilliance he once produced regularly while Squillaci remains a study in defensive uncertainty. Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, two players who most certainly do offer much for Arsenal’s future, also continue to struggle for form. Tomas Rosicky, who scored Arsenal’s goal and was clearly their best player, provided the only cause for optimism.

...there was still no shortage of experience in Arsenal’s team last night. Nine who started were full internationals, with only Jernade Meade, the 20-year-old left back, making his full first-team debut."

    We need a clearout...

    Arshavin
    Chamakh
    Bendtner
    Squillaci
    Fabianski
    Djourou
    Santos
    Eastmond

should not be on first team wages...SELL THEM!- One of our biggest problems is that we keep so many sub par players in our squad and on our wagebill when its OBVIOUS they are not of the required quality.

Bring in a Top striker and a defensive Midfielder. Also keep bringing in young players from other leagues.

It seems to me that no other teams want these crap players, and those that do are not willing to pay their massive wage demands, so we're stuck with them

    Just a quick note to Arsenal87 -

Stop going on about there being 7 first team players. Only Szcs in goal and Vermaelen start when the squad is fit.

I understand your annoyed (suprise suprise lol) but you over exxagerate so much that people do need to call you up on the nonsense you spout.

And no it wasn't a nothing game, but it wasn't a realy important game by any strecth of the word. I'd much rather have a fit and healthy team ready to go at WBA on the weekend, than play our first team to beat olympiacos when we have already qualified in the hope it gets us an easier draw. Last year we topped our group, drew milan and went out. This year teams like Juve/Madrid/Milan are in second. I'd rather we play Malaga/PSG/Shaktar than one of those. It really is down to the luck of the draw now.

I'm happy we are through and actually thought we put in a good performance. We had a storming first half where we looked the far better team. We conceded after a non-corner and then fell away towards the end. Considering the lack of game time and youth in the team i thought it was a good showing and probably what was expected.

I'm also happy that Cazorla, Arteta etc have had a rest ready for the weekend - which is a much more important game.

Spouting nonsense? Speak for yourself, since players like Gervinho, Ramsey, OXO, Jenkinson, are first team players, not part of the B team.

But you can keep pretending they aren't to make yourself feel better. And even your consolation isn't much better, since by your argument, our B team is so ****, they're expected to lose, and we shouldn't be all too annoyed by it, but should just expect them. Yeah, save that sh!t talk for yourself, if you want to have that loser mentality, that's all good for you, but don't try making many others fans like me, try to start thinking like that.

87, While I often agree with your sentiments, you really would be taken much more seriously if you articulated your arguments better.

Sagna is 1st chioce RB, Jenkinson is B team RB
Podolski is 1st choice LW, Gervinho is B choice LW
Jack, Arteta and Caz are 1st choice Midfield, Ramsey is again B squad
Theo is 1st choice RW, Oxo is B option.

So, Celtic go through after Samaras takes a dive to win a pen. Will there be an outrage like there was when Eduardo dived against Celtic?

No, because Celtic are seen as being small and "noble" (i use that term as loosely as i can) and we're seen as big bully boys.

Man City become the first English side not to win a single game in the CL.

Chelsea become the first holders of the CL to go out of the group stage.
