The statue in Bristol was of Edward Colston.

Edward Colston (2 November 1636 – 11 October 1721) was an English merchant, philanthropist and Tory Member of Parliament who was involved in the Atlantic slave trade.

Colston followed his father in the family business becoming a sea merchant, initially trading in wine, fruits and textiles, mainly in Spain, Portugal and other European ports. By 1680, he became involved in the slave trade as a member of the Royal African Company, which held a monopoly on the English trade in African slaves. He was deputy governor of the company in 1689–90.

In 1680, Colston became a member of the Royal African Company, which had held the monopoly in England on trading along the west coast of Africa in gold, silver, ivory and slaves from 1662. Colston was deputy governor of the company from 1689 to 1690. His association with the company ended in 1692. This company had been set up by King Charles II and his brother the Duke of York (later King James II), who was the governor of the company, together with City of London merchants, and it had many notable investors, including philosopher and physician John Locke (who later changed his stance on the slave trade) and the diarist Samuel Pepys.

During Colston's involvement with the Royal African Company from 1680 to 1692 it is estimated that the company transported over 84,000 African men, women and children to the Caribbean and the rest of the Americas, of whom as many as 19,000 may have died on the journey. The slaves were sold for labour on tobacco, and, increasingly, sugar plantations, whose planters considered Africans would be more suited to the conditions than British workers, as the climate resembled the climate of their homeland in West Africa. Enslaved Africans were much less expensive to maintain than indentured servants or paid wage labourers from Britain.

Not quite the jolly good chap was he?
Go back far enough in history and where do the majority of Americans originate from? Immigrants and slaves and what did those people do to the Native American Indians?

None of us are responsible for our past but it is what has made us today. You learn lessons of what should not be repeated. Slavery is wrong but we all buy cheap imported products from China and India where kids are working in slave like conditions and the big companies like Apple benefit from this.

Was slavery wrong yes of course but at the time it was the way of life for many. Were the Romans wrong for having slaves fight in gladiator tournaments? Should the Colosseum in Rome be pulled down, should visitors be banned?

Antifa LA, I'm presuming, from what I've read, that's your name now, was anyone a jolly chappie back in the slavery days, but typical looney lefties, you forgot quite a bit of information that shows the good side of Edward Colston.

Don't you find it amazing that the Marxist Communist BLM /Cancel Culture have to go back to the 16 and 17 hundreds to find an excuse to tear down a statue, the BLM idiots weren't even born back then and obviously, like you, know nothing of the history of slave trading, same in your neck of the woods too.

BLM / Antifa / Cancel Culture / Looney Lefty idiots with all their destruction, destroying, burning, looting and murdering aren't such jolly chappies either........are they Antifa LA.

Here's some of the info you accidentally on purpose forgot Antifa LA.

The Black Royals and elite in Africa at the time sold black Africans into slavery for profit, yes profit Antifa LA. One Royal wrote a letter to the British Government begging them not to outlaw slavery as they had a right to make a profit from it.......No one says slavery was good, and it was happening around the world however...who do you think the worst criminals were.......The black Royals selling their people into slavery, or the countries around the world who were buying them..................Food for thought hey Antifa LA.

Philanthropic works

Although it is unknown how much Colston gave to charity, his name permeates Bristol on buildings and landmarks. Colston supported and endowed schools, almshouses, hospitals and churches in Bristol, London and elsewhere.[7][14][15] David Hughson, writing in 1808, described Colston as "the great benefactor of the city of Bristol, who, in his lifetime, expended more than 70,000L. [£] in charitable institutions".[16]

Edward Colston (1636–1721), MP for Bristol (1710–1713), was one of this city's greatest benefactors. He supported and endowed schools, almshouses, hospitals and churches in Bristol, London and elsewhere. Many of his charitable foundations continue. This statue was erected in 1895 to commemorate his philanthropy.

Bristol Museums has sought to explain the reason for Colston’s statue remaining in the city and says on its website that “Colston never, as far as we know, traded in enslaved Africans on his own account”.

But it added: “What we do know is that he was an active member of the governing body of the RAC, which traded in enslaved Africans, for 11 years.”

That's right Antifa LA, his statue was erected to commemorate his Philanthropy, and not his slave trading. You and the cuck cancel culture got it wrong cos you don't know your history.

BLM and the cancel culture cucks turn to destroying statues and buildings cos they got nothing else to claim. They also want to destroy countries cultures and the countries themselves...................here's the future scenario, if BLM and cancel culture cucks do manage to destroy a country's history and culture, they'll still be dumb cancel culture cucks cos there'll be nothing to teach'em.........that's how dumb they are.................thankfully, it'll never happen.

Antifa LA, do you think BLM and the cancel culture cucks will try to erase Neanderthal man from history, they also fought each other and took each other as slaves. When do you think BLM and Cancel culture cucks will turn their attention to tearing down the Pyramids and Sphinx, or the hanging gardens of Babylon......what about going to the Arab countries to try and release the slaves there.................do you think it will happen?

Fact is, BLM and the Cancel Culture cucks don't give a damn about black lives, especially as they are also killing other black people and little black girls and babies.

President of the United States material.

But why now?

There was a poll asking whether the statue should be removed, very few responded and the result was to keep it.
Bristol was built on the slave trade. It was a different time and we all know it was wrong. Britain didn't abolish slavery until 1833, so, at the time, he wasn't doing anything wrong.
Up until the middle of the last century in England there were 'no Irish' signs posted in windows and the Irish slave trade predated the African slave trade. There are no protests about this though.
I detest what Colston was involved in but we can't change the past.
Anyone who works for, or profits from, working for a tobacco company deserves more abuse than Colston. They have killed and brought misery to billions. Anyone who produces, sells or profits from class A drugs is the scum of the earth, ruining lives of those that take them and those affected by those that do.
The idea that I am responsible for someone's ancestor being sold into slavery is utterly ridiculous. It's like saying that all Germans are responsible for what Hitler did.

As many black commentators have said, they need to move on from slavery.
<applause>
But would the black community around the World have evolved as quickly without slavery.( just playing devils advocate)<ok>

Easy Tiger! These Class A drugs that you don't want produced would result in more deaths than producing them. What you appear to have forgotten is that most of these self-same drugs have been developed as life-savers - and they are!

I think the word missing from your sentence is 'illegal'. Crooks are quite adept at making these drugs themselves, so why attack people in the pharma industry who are tying to save lives?.
