And just to reinitiate this is not disparaging Britain. We are very good car makers (which is why so many car makers are based here and happy to stay here) but we're not irreplaceable and we've not proved to be very good car company owners.

We're also very good at a great many things especially when we work with others. So in much the same way that I'm typing this on a computer with a lead design by an Englishman but for an American company but that was built in China and then shipped by a German company on either an American designed or pan-European airplane until it was finally delivered by a UK company until I'm sending a message via a communications medium created by an Englishman in a European institution.

Which is why even an arch Brexiteer like the billionaire James Dyson moved his manufacturing to China.

We are not a sh*t country by any means but thinking we can compete in a global economy by reducing our shared advantages to an isolationist approach strikes me as ridiculous.

The world is only going to advance in one direction and retreating to isolationist policies without an Empire to fall back on is equivalent to King Canute.

You can talk about hard brexit but even talking about the small advantages then the younger generation is not going to trade a burgundy passport to a blue passport if it means giving up the much more useful EU mobile phone data roaming.

Name me a similar sized country to ours that has taken a decision to actively withdraw from co-operation with its local neighbours and gone alone that has thrived?

 

Saudi Arabia fell out with Iran,Iraq and Yemen and are doing brilliant.
Bigger land mass but mostly desert.
