Remain-backing MPs from across Britain’s main parties are drawing up plans to block the prospect of a no-deal Brexit, it has been revealed.
The cross-party group — which includes prominent Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat, SNP, and Green MPs — seek to give Parliament the power to stop the UK leaving talks with Brussels without a deal, according to The Guardian, despite barely more than one in four Britons believing that “any deal is better than no deal”.
An amendment to the Brexit bill tabled by Tory former cabinet minister Dominic Grieve would decree that any final deal has to be approved by Parliament, giving MPs — most of whom supported Remain during the European Union (EU) referendum campaign last year — the power to reject any agreement struck with Brussels by Prime Minister Theresa May.
Tabled by Europhile former Tory Chancellor Ken Clarke, and former Labour minister Chris Leslie, another amendment proposes that a two-year “transition” period — during which the UK would stay shackled to Brussels — which was suggested by the prime minister during a speech in Florence, be written into law.
If passed, the amendment would block Britain from leaving Europe if a period where the country remains subject to EU rules and laws was not agreed.

Northern Ireland needs voice at Brexit table
The head of one of the Republic’s main political parties has called for a Northern Irish government to reconvene so the Province can have a voice over Brexit, it has been reported.
Leader of Fianna Fail Micheal Martin was speaking the day after Leo Varadkar – the Irish taoseach and leader of the Fine Gael party – used a visit to Northern Ireland to say the EU and Irish government need to know who can “speak for Northern Ireland” in the Brexit process.
Mr Martin, speaking at the party’s annual conference in Dublin on Saturday, was quoted by the BBC as saying: “Central to getting through Brexit is for the northern Executive and Assembly to be re-established. “Northern Ireland is not at the table and its voice cannot be heard.
“The failure of Sinn Fein and the DUP to govern is threatening the progress achieved over the last 20 years. “It is leaving Northern Ireland with no say as the Tory civil war continues to make a bad Brexit decision even worse.”
It echoes remarks from Mr Varadkar on Friday, who, during a visit to Londonderry, said: “Now more than ever we need an answer to the question, of who we – and others in Europe – talk to in Belfast? “Who will speak for Northern Ireland and her 1.8 million people? “The clock is ticking and it is later than you think. “We must protect what has been achieved in recent decades through the peace process and with the support and facilitation of the European Union.” He also said said he might attempt to seek some kind of “unique solution” to how the Province deals with Brexit, which does not “undermine the constitutional settlement”.

British farmers would grow more food domestically if the UK left the European Union without a trade deal and fresh tariffs added to imported produce, a Government minister has said.
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling was quizzed about a claim by Sainsbury’s chairman David Tyler, who told the Sunday Times that a ‘no deal Brexit’ could result in an average 22% tariff on all EU food bought by British retailers.
But Grayling, appearing on the BBC’s The Andrew Marr Show, dismissed the fears, suggesting instead Britain would be “grow more here and buy more from around the world”.
The hike in costs would come from ending tariff-free trade with the EU and reverting to World Trade Organisation rules, which would see the UK hit with tariffs straightaway of up to 40% on some beef and dairy products.
Around 70% of the food the UK imports comes from the EU.

Tory MPs are in talks with Labour to prevent Britain leaving the European Union without a deal, John McDonnell has suggested.
The shadow chancellor said Parliament can stop the Government taking the country out of the block without an agreement in place.
But Chris Grayling said the Labour MP was talking nonsense and accused him of threatening to create a chaotic Brexit.
The Transport Secretary insisted Britain would be successful even if it left without a deal and suggested crashing out would lead to British farmers growing more food to meet demand.
Former Brexit minister David Jones said Britain should suspend negotiations until the EU is prepared to talk sensibly about money and future trade terms.
Mr McDonnell claimed the Tories are fighting among themselves rather than negotiating with Brussels and said he was not willing to countenance a “no deal” outcome.
He expects moves to guarantee in law a “meaningful vote” on the outcome of Brexit talks will secure a Commons majority.
The European Union (Withdrawal) Bill is notably absent from the Commons schedule for the week ahead, with the Government saying it wants to closely evaluate some 300 amendments and more than 50 new clauses proposed.
Mr McDonnell told BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show: “I don’t think there’s a majority for no deal. I think on a cross-party basis you’ll see in the debates in the coming week – the Government will get the message, there will be a deal.”

I read something about this a couple of weeks ago, apparently, or a couple of weeks ago it was only 2 remaining tories who were conversing with Labour to try and stop Brexit.
Problem for Labour is, if they manage to stop Brexit, which they won't, they go against the will of the people, which is a dictatorship. They won't do their election bid any good, especially now students have learned Corbyn's a liar, and used the students to gain votes.
Any other country would unite, stick together and make it work. They would produce and buy local. Instead we bicker, we argue, we have the media trying to cause a frenzy reporting lots of worse case exaggerated stories, always pointing out how bad a no deal might be for us, it would be equally as bad for Europe.
Buy local and pay fair prices or pay 22% more from imported crap from the thieving EU. Sign a trade deal with the likes of Japan and drive Honda and Nissan, ditch the BMW, Audi and Mercs, I'm sure the Germans want that to happen.
I'd tell them to go screw and walk away with no deal, I'm sick of them trying to get us over a barrel and instead of uniting like a nation we're Pig ignorant divided.
If the filthy rich of the country still want the £50k cars they'll not bat an eyelid on 22% the rest of us normal folk will drive a car from a country that does welcome a trade deal. There will be winners and losers. No trade deal and the EU threaten us with a 22% tax... First thing I'd do is whack a tax on Aldi and Lidl and give incentives to stores buying and selling more local
We have over 18 months to go, stick two fingers up, walk away and start giving local producers and store purchasers time to source local.
Buy local and pay fair prices or pay 22% more from imported crap from the thieving EU. Sign a trade deal with the likes of Japan and drive Honda and Nissan, ditch the BMW, Audi and Mercs, I'm sure the Germans want that to happen.
