Britain put an end to the slave trade with the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act 1807, a landmark victory for the abolitionist movement that included politicians and Quakers, though it did not immediately end slavery itself in the colonies. The institution of slavery in the British Empire was then outlawed by the Slavery Abolition Act 1833,

Enforcement: After the slave trade was abolished, Britain deployed the West Africa Squadron, a naval force, to intercept and patrol the Atlantic to stop illegal slaving ships and free captives

An estimated 17,000 Royal Navy sailors died between 1807 and 1865 while serving in the West Africa Squadron, which patrolled to suppress the slave trade. The majority of these deaths were due to disease, including combat with slave trader

I think enough of our people have died preventing slavery if they want repatriations, take it from west Africans and Arabs who kept finding ways overland to keep the heinous trade going

Only so he could fine their owners, and 99% of the 'free' were villeins, serfs or indentured servants for life, which is pretty much slavery in all but name.

Correct. Wasn't saying William was a philanthropist. Just pointing out that by hook or by crook, slavery in Britain was outlawed very early on.

Every race in every region on earth have had slaves at some point. Britain were first to abolish slavery first within its boundaries and then attempted to abolish it worldwide by force and at great cost to the taxpayers until 2015 when the debt was officially paid off.

Most people don't know this. Including Lenny Henry it seems.

Yeah, but most of that money went to slave owners and traders as a bribe to stop, so the rich got richer and the poor foot the bill, as per. I wonder if the Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch get the same? They took over enough to populate South America (after trying to kill off the locals, of course).
Arabs and Chinese won't get any grief, mainly because they castrated them, so no descendants.

Yes, the slave owners were compensated as the slaves were set free. Not sure what the alternative was. Many of the freed slaves continued their work but as 'free men'.

Then there's the old "Africans enslaved Africans and Europeans were just the transport" theory.

Britain actually had a fleet of war ships patrolling the Atlantic enforcing the rule. That's also come at a cost to the vast majority of people paying taxes until 2015. The mortality rate amongst the sailors patrolling the African Coast was something like 4 times that of sailors in European waters. Britain lost a lot of men at sea.

Its something Britain should be proud of. Let's face it, there is alot she cant be proud of. Abolishing slavery has to be recognised and taught in schools alot more. Maybe the Lenny Henry's might have a slightly more favourable view.

As you say, the further east you go, the worse the slaves were treated. Korea has a major history in slavery. Nobody is asking them for reparations.
