That second half performance was totally pathetic and we ended up lucky to get all 3 pts . Why we came out so passive after being pretty bright first half ,which had the bonus of Wirtz first goal and iirc Frimpongs first PL assist, is beyond me .

It’s incredible, you’d think we’d be going for the throat - instead we just come out like it’s a training session.

If the thinking is not to overexert then it’s having the opposite effect as we let teams back in the game and then are working our bollox off as the momentum swings and they push to get something

Unbeaten in seven...
Five wins in those seven...
Four wins on the bounce...
In the top four...

#****season

We’re not throwing these results away which of course is promising from where we were - but we’re still so frustrating to watch and really struggle to control games

When we were on a losing streak we were all saying variations on "lets get back to basics"or "let's just start winning games one way or another", or even "let's just stop losing".
Well, that's what were doing. It's not a great watch, and it's bad for the nerves, and we really need to improve - but it's a step in the right direction at least.

My fear is although the result have improved, the quality of the opposition has been on the poorer side of the league and out of them we've made it bloody hard work. As soon as it rolls round to a few decent sides in a row, we will be back to square one.

Do we actually look any better?

Hard to say I suppose, until we do come up against stronger teams.
Maybe it's just a personality thing, but I prefer to look for positives wherever I can, and I saw some good stuff in the first half that gives me some hope that it might be starting to come together.
The defence still needs a lot of work though, and the tendency to go off the boil is a concern.

Wirtz & ekitike are looking very bright, but you could tell from the start they would do well. Frimpong looks an exciting addition & kerkez is finding his feet, but again, I was expecting them to come good.

The lack of any urgency in the midfield and tendancy to all go missing at once is still very evident.
The defence looks incredibly exposed and they are panicking.

Its half way, and while I was expecting miracles, I was hoping that we'd have a bit more shape and be a bit more solid. All the more bemusing that's it's the players that have been here years that are my biggest cause for bemusement.

Yeah, I said weeks ago that I thought there were too many changes to gel straight away, but it was the performances of the old hands that were puzzling.
But I see positives in all the things you've mentioned at the start there, and hope the others can regain some confidence.
Kerkez looks better with Wirtz, who is working with him, rather than Gakpo who tends to ignore him and cut inside all the time, and I can see him and Frimpong developing into a passable imitation of Robbo and Trent in time. They both, along with Wirtz, got in behind the defence several times, which is something we've missed this season.

I also said that there are too many changes….but while you stayed positive, I could not…..there are many issues that are not related to the changes of players.

There is still a huge tendency to play it through the middle than use width. Drives me mad that we continually pass into the most congested areas of the pitch when players are available wide. We are (relatively) easy to defend against these days.

Fitness, shape, confidence, patterns of play, style of play, defending and attacking set pieces, disjointed pressing, passes….simple passes going astray, the painfully slow play, allowing the opposing defence to get set makes my eyes bleed
…..it smacks of incompetence at the coaching level. My inner negativity has consumed me and I curse the coaching team for being so arrogant and changing what worked…..perhaps they could not coach it and thought they knew better. Who knows.

I agree that the new signings are starting to shine now though and that will help but it will not undo everything; that much is crystal clear. We look fragile and lost at times……we’ve craved a playmaker like Wirtz for an age….now we have him, we’ve lost everything else.

I’ll take the points, of course, but they don’t paper over the cracks for me, I’m afraid. That’s not negativity, just realism based on what I see. The latest run is like our first 5 games, we’ll drop points again soon when we should not. I truly hope that I am completely and utterly wrong.

This surprised me massively.
On two counts -
1. you did it
2. I saw it

You can wrap it up in a lot of ways. It’s deffo not a great season.

Who said it was a great season?

Just putting it into perspective. We've had an awful start, one of the worst of all time for defending champions, and we're not playing great, yet we're still in there fighting.

We need to go back to basics and just find results, that's what we're doing.
