I think after the "Fernando affair" I`ve resigned myself to the fact that these days any player can potentially leave any club if the money is right so all I hope for is that Suarez gives his best while he is at Liverpool (and I don`t doubt for a minute that he will) and that if in the future he does decide the grass is greener elsewhere that he is honest and open about it and doesn`t act like a snake in which case I will wish him all the best. In the meantime I am gonna sit back and enjoy watching this little genius rip defences to shreds week in week out.
There is an important point here that we appear to be missing and it has more to do with us than it does with the players. We do have a tendancy to demand that our players give the same loyalty to the club as we have. If and when they fall short of that level we label them as traitors etc. Torres did not write the words of the song we sang him - we did. We have to change our relationship. It's great when players really do buy into the whole culture of the club. Some foreign players really do buy into it classic examples being Molby and Kuyt. Others respect it and give of their best whilst they are with us. Others enjoy their time with us and move on. We have to remeber its really a job for them. I have worked for a number of different firms. Some I have enjoyed working for more than others but I have always reserved the right to move when doing so was best for me and my familly. It must be even harder for our local lads!
Dave, I understand your point but I don't think it's quite that simple. I could be wrong, but I don't imagine that when you're at work and you look out of the window you have 50,000 people singing your praises. Or when you walk through the streets you see people wearing shirts with Foredeckdave on the back. I would think that a player builds up a rapport with a club and its fans that makes it a little more than just a job. And at that level how much difference can the money make to their lives? Footballers are just people and like everyone, some have a greater sense of loyalty than others.
If he has a good season next year and you fail to make the CL, you may find him on the next plane to Spain.
