I realise we are only speaking hypothetically here but firstly I'd be surprised if Rodgers is naïve enough to not know footballers will look after themselves financially. Secondly I think he probably HAS got a set budget. The worry for me is that if 8mill and 60 grand a week is breaking that budget then we are going to be shopping for players with Whoops stickers on them (yes I have just been into Asda ). As I said before I am partly playing devils advocate here because I know no better than you but I do think this will be a blow to BR as this would have been his "no brainer" signing. I think here was a talented young lad who he wanted to bring in and for whatever reason it hasn't happened. The other concern for me is IF this was a decision taken by the money men rather than the manager what message does it send out to players like Suarez and Reina about the clubs ambitions if we can't even beat the Spuds to a player our manager already knows? Jesus I'm depressing myself now
Whole topic (as much as I like a hole topic too) and that's a cop out btw...hypothetically what would you say if it came out that this was a player BR had set his heart on?
But that budget wouldn't be for just one player. Rodgers has said he wants three or four new signings, if he only has £30m (for arguments sake) then he may see some others areas of the pitch as a higher priority. Or, he simply wasn't prepared to commit a quarter of his budget on a player that plays in a position where we have nine other players that can play there. As we have both said now, we do not know I appreciate your playing devils advocate, I do it most of the time myself I don't think the other players will pay too much attention to it, plus they will know more details then we do
The obviously I wouldn't be impressed. Unfortunately, this situation can only go one way for both the owners and Rodgers; if it wasn't the owners that pulled out then nothing changes but if it was them then the fans start asking questions = lose or lose situation. If it was Rodgers that pulled out then everyone will just think "fair enough, his decision", if it was then his hands were tied = win or win situation. PS - I am not standing up for FSG or Rodgers here, I too am playing devils advocate
I'm not feeling to great about next season at all. Nothing to do with our manager, FSG or transfers etc. Plenty of time to bring in new faces and all...but I believe we are light-years behind our 'desired' rivals. I'm not expecting much of an improvement to last season.
Yeah but surely a budget of 30 mill for 3 or 4 players works out at roughly 8-10 mill a player Siggy was hardly going to cripple us surelym I'd also take issue with us having that many players who play that position (to a good standard). Stevie G is the one who will but he is unlikely to give us a full season and is coming to the end of his career.what did we lack last year? Goals. Here was a young midfielder who scored them for fun last year going at a very reasonable price (in todays market).
True, but what if he thinks we need some experience or a forward, neither of which come cheap. Can you tell I am just joining the guessing crew here? The estimated £30m could be added to with player sales too. This is why I am not convinced it was FSG being tight Agreed, but we still have nine players in that position whether we rate them or not. We could argue that central defence needs improving with Carragher being past it and the likes of Kelly, Coates and Wilson unproven in EPL but were not shouting out for CBs at the minute...
Why does it have to be your owners or manager who pulled out of this deal, has it not crossed your minds that Siggy may have looked at Spurs and thought they had a stronger squad (at present) and played a style of football better suited to getting the best out of his game and so it was his decision!
No worries; think it's the most logical reason out of them all if not good for our egos. Hopefully one he'll live to regret but even if we end up successful again, in reality I don't think he'll care much as long as he's paid his wage.
What is being underplayed here is the notion of value. I could afford to pay £5 for a Mars bar - it's not that I couldn't pay it it's that I choose not to as I don't see the value. And it's a sliding scale - 50p? Ok £1.00 mmm? £1.50 no chance! Maybe he was a BR favourite for the Swans due to his value in that team. With all due respect to Swansea LFC is a step up in quality players wise. Maybe Siggi was just too much for what WE needed. Or he's a money grabbing, puffin eating bell end? Who knows!!
A few of us have been trying to get this across (without the Mars Bar). We don't know the reasons why we didn't get him- they could be perfectly valid. The time to assess our transfer activity is when we see who we've got and how well they're performing.
Even more now, I really hope we finish above Spurs. I have to admit I'd have preferred to have got Siggy, but the deal is done and Spurs have a decent young player. I hope we can attract some other young talent soon - I'm bored now the Euro's have finished! Even posted some rubbish on the GC...that's how bored I was! At this rate, I'll be visiting the Man U bored [sic]!
That's true Saint and I think we all accept that really but just imagine how boring the board would have been this last fortnight without me being a miserable moaning twat
I've tried really hard to care that Spurs signed him, but I really can't bring myself to it. We only have £30m to spend on playes this summer, and IMO we don't need to be spending that on a CM, attacking or otherwise. Other areas of the squad need addressing first. Sig is a good young player, but there will be good young players aroud next summer. We need to get Strikers and the wings sorted 1st. Hope he does well at Spurs, interesting to see if Modric is still there at the start of the season.
The good news though is that Guti appears available for a free. And I'm sure I read somewhere that Lee Hendrie and Emile Heskey are available too. Let's build our new team around Carra and maxi.
He may well have signed because he thinks Spurs are a better bet, more money and promises made. But will Modrich be there at the start of the season. Adebayor is going, King has packed in, Keane has gone, Pavlechenko has gone. So its not really the same team as last year. Add to that Bale having an injury that will keep him out for the early part of the season and Spurs could easily have a bad start and be well off the pace by Xmas. I am sure Siggy took all this into account and after giving all aspects of Spurs current position due consideration said........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "pay me £20k more than LFC and all the cod I can eat and I'm yours"
