I think there was an end game. I think Hamas were trying to end the normalisation of relations between Saudi and Isreal, which was effectively sidelining them. Saudi can't now negotiate with Israel when it is about to wage war on Palestinians in Gaza. It is also interesting that the other Palestinian Authority (Fatah) are sitting back in the West Bank, not getting too uppity about this, as it is in their interest to have Hamas severely weakened or destroyed. A swift Israeli action, without massive civilian casualties, which of course will be extremely difficult, might actually not be a bad thing for an eventual settlement. I suspect though that the Israelis will go over the top, seeing all the western support, as tacit approval to wipe out Hamas, and flatten Gaza in the process. If they do it is more likely to lead to a major escalation in the region, as usual.
Israel is about to make a fatal mistake. Their gung ho nature will backfire and arab nations will get involved. I can see this becoming a wider middle eastern conflict.
What was more worrying was the first ever contact between MBS and Iran. The US posturing is very aggressively anti Muslim and will be seen as such by many eastern countries. Then you’ve got Putin telling Israel to calm down. What a world we live in. China being oddly quiet isn’t settling any nerves.
