Jennie Gow, BBC Radio 5 live pit-lane reporter in Bahrain

"While Red Bull have at least got out of the garage and managed 13 laps so far, they are clearly still in trouble. The turbo is not kicking in on fire-up in the way it does on other cars, and there is a distinct smell of burning from the car after it has been running - suggesting those overheating problems are far from solved. All the Renault-powered teams seem to be suffering from similar problems, with electrical and software issues blighting their progress. Meanwhile, the word among the teams is that Mercedes and McLaren look in good shape, and Kevin Magnussen is impressing many people up and down the pit lane."

Is this the worst a team has done, in terms of where they were last year compared to testing in the next year?

If or when both Renault and Red Bull solve their issues they will still have a lot of catching up to do. If these issues continue to plague Red Bull when the season starts, they could be starting from the back end of the grid on race day or even the pit lane. Then they may not even finish the race. We could see a situation where they have 0 points from the first few races if things don't look up very soon.

Mclaren started the 2009 season pretty badly from what I can remember.

They were just slow for what I remember, not this bad IMO with the engine being a complete dud. McLaren could actually do something about it as well, Red Bull have to wait for Renault to improve so development could be stagnant for months until they can actually see if the car fully works.
