Any explanation behind Maldonados 1m24? To be fair to Lotus they have made rapid progress over two races. It would be very interesting to see where the Lotus and Red Bull would compare to Mercedes if they had equal power. Is there a real chance of them actually challenging Merc or is it fanciful? The whole thing is a farce at the moment because is it not pretty certain that MercedesF1 have more power than their customers at McLaren, Williams and Force India? It's like the whole field are handicapped to an extent.
Said it all along, that Lotus under the early issues is a bloody good car, it i'm not at all surprised they've found so much speed so quickly.
Maldonado did a 1m26.311s on softs (morning) and 1m24.871s on super-softs (afternoon). Rosberg did a 1m26.187s on Mediums in between those two runs. Rosbergs fastest lap of 1m25.805s was also on Mediums at the end of the day
Do you think that it was a poor decision from the FIA to limit engine development in the first season of the new Formula? The teams clicked on too late what Merc had done to their engines and now we have to sit and suffer 19 races of a non-contest as a consequence. In what should have been the most exciting shakeup in years, we are left with an absolute farce. Look how close the racing is in behind. If they were all developing the engines it would be a great fight.
Crap!!! Next thing you would tell me is that Mercedes should develop engines for everybody so they could have competition. This is a race not a beauty contest.
It's pretty certain? And where did you get that information? They might have the same engine but not the technology to get it working at maximum...should mercedes go to them and sort that out too? Also we know for sure Renault was giving Red Bull the updates before the other Renault powered teams, and lotus made a little issue out if that...we know that for sure, but I don't know where you got that mercedes bit from..never saw that or heard that anywhere. Actually Williams were about the quickest car during the early testing so clearly it isn't the engine they are having problems with. Also Mclaren were. Right up there too. Maybe you should read below what's Smedley had to say about the engine. On the Mercedes, Smedley said he only perceives the car itself to be “decent” but admits the overall package of car and power unit is what has given the championship leader its early edge. “They have an excellent power unit package which we are very, very happy to have in the back of the Williams. The Mercedes is a very impressive package, and I think they've produced a decent car. I'm not sure with the same power in the back of all the cars which would be the best. “Do they have a weakness? Well, clearly not, we've done five races and they've won five of them by a fairly hefty margin…”
"Pretty much for everybody else, but not with the Mercedes drivers hopefully. It is already a 2 man championship in 1 team." "Look how close the racing is in behind." In terms of the championship, is it much worse than what we would normally have? It's not that unusual to have a season where it's clear early on that two drivers will contest it. The only difference is that they are team-mates. No-one hd a problem with Senna/Prost did they? Yes, the racing is close behind. So there's plenty to play for, and there should be plenty of action.
Would it be more fair then if we put all the cars in a bag and let the drivers draw straws for the car to drive? Everyone had the same rules and the same time to develop engine and cars. It's just that mercedes did a better job with their engine and with the car as a whole. They also made a good decision in selecting two driver that to me is the best combination. They know each other and they are understanding the car and getting to grips a little quicker than the others..what can you do? Put restrictions on mercedes to cut back engine power so the others can catch up? If you start an engine development race do you think mercedes will sit back and watch?
Is his comment not accurate? There is no such thing as customer engines any more. Mercedes, Ferrari or Renault can not supply a power unit to one team that is in any way different or superior to the power units they supply to their customers. The three leading teams in the WCC are Mercedes powered Mercedes, followed by Renault powered Red Bull followed by Ferrari powered Ferrari. The so called freeze on the development of the power units is purely theoretical. In practice there is nothing to stop Renault or Ferrari finding a cure to their power unit problems, providing of course that their engineers actually know what the problems are. Once they have solved their problems they then apply to to FIA to have their improvements implemented. These improvements can only be blocked by Mercedes powered teams. It is highly unlikely that anyone would object because they may find themselves in the same situation in future. I have no problem with the Mercedes dominance this year. If anything at least it serves as a slap in the face, a dose of reality, to the people that thought that Vettel won WDC's out of his sheer genius.
So what does FIA do..give mercedes a ten place grid penalty for each race? I think they would still win. Ahhh, I have an idea...maybe you give them a two place penalty for every race they win until they are at the back of the grand...
As many times as it's needed. Same people who are moaning about Mercedes were the ones who were saying that it was down to everyone else to catch RBR for all these years. Now they have been caught, they're all crying foul.
