I was on the drinking carriage on the 6 something from London Victoria and, as usual, most of the regulars poured on for an hour of drinking and smoking to Haywards Heath and beyond to Brighton. One day, the week following 11/9, someone asked "Where's John?"

He was one of the lads who never came back that day and was one of the pisshead regulars on that train. Never forgot him.

    Sting's new album is sublime.
He goes back to his roots and basically sings local songs relating to the shipyards...... all with an accent too.
Anyone who knows and loves the history in our region will find his songs resonating loudly.
He is joined by Jimmy Nail and Brian Johnston amongs other...
This is a masterpiece folks, really is.

Music; Been listening to Queens of the Stone Age - ....Like Clockwork. Sublime album, check out the live version of "I Appear Missing" from Letterman on Youtube. Josh Homme is one talented mo'fo. Also like the new track from Kings of Leon, "Don't Matter".

TV; Just finished watching the sublime Ray Donovan on Sky Atlantic, starring Liev Schrieber and Jon Voight. Better than Boardwalk Empire, IMO, just brilliant.

Film; Star Trek - Into Darkness about the best I've seen lately. Disappointing time for films at the moment. Before that, End of Watch (Jake Gyllenhall) and Django were among the best.

Massive QOTSA fan. Got all their stuff and love Like Clockwork. Song for the Deaf and God is in the Radio are still two of my all time favourite songs! Kings of Leon have lost quite a bit of lustre for me since the first two albums (particularly the first one). I will give them a listen but haven't heard Don't Matter. Supersoaker did nothing for me, just sounded like a bad California Waiting. Not enjoying the wall of noise that seems to have crept in. There is not loads jumping out at present musically for me. I have been giving the Artic Monkeys a try again. I couldn't say I find the new stuff amazing but maybe its a grower. Biffys single "Victory over the sun" was my favourite track off any of Opposites. Great album but I love Biffy.

Ray Donovan is one of the best shows I've watched in a long time. I have been watching various other shows at present (Bates Motel, Under the Dome etc) but they all fall painfully short of Ray Donovan and I end up judging them against it. One show I am bang into is Peaky Blinders. All star cast so as you'd expect its pretty slick in terms of the acting. Love it.

Films are really rank at the moment.

For QOTSA, hard to beat Go with the Flow. Just brilliant. Completely agree about KoL, most of it is now nauseating - the Mollys Chambers grit is all but gone. Don't Matter is reminiscent of that sound but sadly seems more like a one off. If you like the Monkeys try some older b sides - The Afternoons Hat, Electricity and Blonde O Sonic Shimmer Trap are great examples. Also I guess you already checked Them Crooked Vultures?

Just got into Blinders - brilliant, but then Cillian Murphy could read the argos catalogue and I'd be hooked. BBC often do a great job - Luther, Sherlock both jump out.

Anyone had the misfortune to watch The Newsroom?!

Now that the callous psychopath is out of my life (can we please ban her for being a hoe of immense proportions?), I've read a good few books, of which I'd recommend the following.

The Secret Footballer - decent insight and some goss, but not exactly revelatory. Worth a read though.
Spartacus - Ben Kane is a sex god to all who like historical fiction, and this is well worth £3 on kindle.
    Odysseus - Manfredi's work isn't as good as Kane's but it's a nice narrative.
The Spartans - this is non-fiction, one of ancient histories greatest compilers, Paul Cartledge provides a definitive and readable account.

Dan Brown's inferno is utter ****. Avoid.

<laugh> Say what you feel JPF.

May have to pick The Spartans, sounds right up my street. Sadly I have become a disgrace in terms of maintaining a literary interest in recent years.
