Game I watched had us passing the ball sideways and backwards with a total lack of urgency. Where has last seasons flowing attacking football gone?

Badontelly home debut.... sahko, mingolet, gerrard, coutinho and henderson.... thats all that remains from team of last year... oh sure no johnson, flanagan and so forth but skertl, sterling and sturridge are big enough misses before we even mention suarez. 4 s's taken out of the line up.
This is my first opportunity to watch the game and I thought we looked really good overall, and the amount of times Senderos got away with fouling Ballotelli is absolutely amazing.
Once Villa got their goal they retreated and held what they had which is fair enough, we didn't have enough craft to break them down with a pass and any attempt to take a man on was dealt with well by Villa. We'll get better but we need to do it quickly.
Our team was simply set up wrong and Rodgers takes full blame IMO. 1) Gerrard cannot play in a midfield 2. Never has done and never will do. Coutinho should have been dropped deeper to play alongside Henderson, in front of Gerrard. 2) As a result of (1), Henderson was restricted so we lost much needed dynamism in the final 3rd. In addition, Coutinho is much better in the midfield 3, playing in the deeper role than as a number 10. 3) Lallana is not fully fit and it showed. Plus he's much more effective as the number 10, and not out wide. 4) Playing 4-2-3-1 meant that we had Lallana and Markovic playing as wingers and not having the space to drift centrally.
