Look no further than Alex Ferguson for getting more than the best out of some very average players - Wes Brown, John O´Shea, Nicky Butt, David Beckham who when moved on, all looked distinctly ordinary.

Interesting that Hughes kept talking about having more to work with in the market once Les left... but Ralph K kept talking it down and suggesting we wouldn't do business.

Meanwhile, the papers (inc Wilson) kept hinting that resources existed.

I’ll contain my excitement until we make the appointment. Positive at least that they have made the move early this time. Learnt from their glaring mistakes last season! There is enough time to turn this season around. We’re not a million miles away from being an average team. Sort the defence, or at least improve it and you’re half way there.
