    BUMP!

I think a dream is basically you thinking/imagining, whilst you're body re-energises. Dreams only happen during REM sleep (which is when you re-energise) I believe, which we enter when we are properly tired (side note: people that sleep less enter it immediately, meaning they can 'survive' on less sleep).

Why we do it is because we literally can't stop thinking. It's impossible. However, our senses are numbed a lot. This means that not only do we not hear as well, etc, but also our ability to challenge things that our brain normally perceives as impossible dims, resulting in us thinking that scoring the winning goal for Newcastle in the Champion's League final and celebrating by making love to Cheryl Cole isn't some deluded, stupid, fantasist idea, and so we just go with it

I had a really weird dream last night - Most of the human race were burying themselves in shallow holes in the ground so that a subterrainian alien would come along and finish us all off. Just as I was about to get killed by the 'aliens', members of my family suddenly emerged from their shallow holes in the ground and told me that we'd all been fooled and that we must get out of the ground.

No, I had not been drinking or taking drugs.
