To get back where I was 4/5 years ago?

Not really. Looking at and have accepted provisionally; Libya, Iraq (Baghdad), Syria, Tunisia

    Hoping for Singapore or HK.

Sorry OT not sure what you mean by the first question?

Tunisia probably the best of the bunch but even so ... not a good selection.

HK or Singapore would be great. My brother worked in Singapore for about five years, took his family with him obviously. If you could get an opportunity there is there any chance your wife would agree to go too? The English school there is brilliant. My nephews got a far better education in their years there than they would have ever received here and there are no safety issues.

My dad works out in the jungles of Nigeria, out on the Niger delta.
If anyone doesn't know much about it, it's certainly a dangerzone with a few local militias, the Nigerian military & police (corruption is rife) and the local terrorist organisation MEND & not to mention local tribal warfare.
He's been doing the same job for 15 years now and although I never get to see him for half the year (even less since I moved away) because of a 4 weeks on/off rota, the life he has provided for my mam, sister (and her daughter/his granddaughter) and finally me is far better than what he could have provided had he stayed in the UK (ridiculous difference in wages).

I guess for my mam at times it was tough & probably lonely having to bring up two kids essentially on her own, but she's been afforded the rare luxury of not having had to work so she could devote all her time to us. Same as my dad I think he does regret sometimes not being there to see his kids grow up, but deep down realises the quality of life we had probably far outweighed having him in this country (especially since he would have only seen us on weekends really whereas instead had the complete 4 weeks off).

Not sure if any of this helps you OT, but I hope it does somehow!

My best friend is working in Singapore at the English school and is desperate to get us out there so it's high in my rankings but I know I'll never be able to buy a house and sate my wifes hopes due to the cost of living.

I see; for better or worse that I have to take that risk abroad again but this time I have to take the family into account.

Short term gains with potentially long term losses...

As you said; I know what I need to do but I just cant work out if it's right.

Please one to my possible detriment?

She indoors knows best. I'm an arse with cash...

OT, out of interest, have you spoken with your OH in detail about this?
Just like others have said, you'll both have to decide and decisions that are this important and life changing are best sorting out that way, your Internet buddies on this forum can't possibly know the full situation without being you so can only advise as best they/we can!

This. It sounds to me like you are feeling obligated to take a course of action that is giving you very real, geniune and understandable fears. Like you say there are very real long term risks to the job. Decisions of this magnitude should be discussed as many times as necessary to make sure you are both happy with the decision.

I'd also say you need to get to bed (as AB said a while ago ;)) so that you can be bright and lively for miniOT. :)

Unless you go back to working abroad, I will insist that you alter your username.

It simply wont do being called 'overseasTOON' when the whole time you're nothing of the sort.

    Go! Ride like the wind!

(For double-bubble it's got to be worth the risk - i've left Newcastle and live in Devon now, I realise it's nowhere near the same kind of move but this has been a brilliant year for me financially after nearly not taking the opportunity at all! GOOD LUCK <cheers>)

We have ToonSi. For months we've talked about it and have both come to the conclusion that we are not fans of the UK since being away.

I do love this country for the majority of the people in it but my wife understands that I'm happier abroad because I've spent half my life away from it in either education or work.

She's spent 2 years away and loved the added quality of life but wants to further her career.

I've known for years that I'm the one to provide a house etc..

Can I still do that based here? I can't see it recently but I want to be the good Dad. I want be the providing husband.

Love if I can provide everything based here.

    Europe is in trouble.

Do you have anyway of discussing how you feel with your employers without making the relationship between them and yourself breakdown?
Just if you could open up to them then they may always be more willing to accept you back should the other job fail in the long term security wise (they may even keep a position open - however unlikely that sounds, but it seems you have done a lot for them).
If you didn't have the responsibilities that you do I'd have definitely said to try it and if it fails at least you tried, but obviously it's not as simple as being 22 & just the GF to worry about when moving!
Definitely a tough situation to advise over!
Does the sector/job you do currently have a lot of opportunities for someone like yourself (even in the UK) or is it like many other areas of work at the minute?

*Edit* Night OT, enjoy the time with your little 'un tomorrow

Don't forget your never more than a flight away.

Not an easy decision for you OT, but money is money, and the more you have, the more your family can have.

Lots of people work away, just look at all the lads in the forces.

HK or Singapore, will pay big bucks.

Think it calls for a serious chat with your wife to see how much her job matters to her <ok>

Only you can really answer this OT, either way you're going to have to make some kind of sacrifice, it comes down to which ones your more prepared to make. I'd probably stick it out in the UK, certainly for the time being, the worst thing you could do is move out to the far east and then decide you'd rather be in the UK.

I would suggest you have a family meeting and discuss this. I know it sounds cliché but it should work.

However if you end up coming back to Belgium , it would welcome you with open hands , remember the beer.

    Remember it.

A friend of mine gave up 2 businesses on the strength of a lucrative contract with a high flying company
I bought one of the companies off him, because it was a good steady business
withing 9 months the high flying company went bust, and he was unemployed for 2 years

I still have, and run this steady business some 12 years later

    a bird in the hand......

    good luck o.t. <ok>
