There was a bit of campaign round October time to get this old classic to number one for Christmas. She's been carrying out charity work in Sierra Leone & had refused to leave because of the ebola outbreak. Unfortunately the campaign didn't gather much pace. http://thebritishsubcultures.com/gloria-jones-tainted-love-christmas-no-1/ As for the year I was born................ One of the songs that came out as sheet music in my birth year is as below. Dad played the accordion and this was one of his favourites. I visited the site at Gundagai 2 months after arriving in Aus in 1968 en route from Sydney to my first job in Adelaide. My dad had died in Hull earlier that year. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxYSegLL3Fk
The funny thing is, the record companies just get more money in with these well intentioned but misguided campaigns at this time of year. Cowell is not losing any money, quite the opposite. You're not sticking it to the man, you're simply making him more money.
The RATM one was fun, but it gets worse and worse. For the mos part, an Xmas number one is the most these winners are going to have to show for themselves in a few years time. Le them have it. Or Michael Bauble.
If it encourages people to actually pay for music (however bad it is) then that can only be good thing. Its a bit of a novelty to people these days unfortunately.
How would you feel if your electrician charged you every time you turned your light on? That's the way "Musicians" make their money. One or two days in a recording studio, then paid for the rest of their lives every time someone uses it. And people complain about footballers wages!!!!
Buy an album and you can listen to that music for the rest of your life without ever paying another penny, you know you don't have to pay them for every listen right? As for them getting paid when someone else uses it, that's fair enough, people are profiting from their work, why shouldn't they get a cut?
You are aware royalties are paid every time a song is played on radio aren't you. That means the artist etc get paid for their previous work despite doing nothing.
If a song is played on the radio then a company is using the artists work to make money, its only logical and fair that the artist receives a cut of that.
And the mechanic who fixes your car should get a cut of your wages because you can get to work because of him? The one that really stirs my **** is this - http://www.ppluk.com/ - Music licence for playing pre-recorded music in your shop.
In fairness a lot of people use popular streaming services these days, such as Deezer etc. Artists still getting paid mind, which is fine and as it should be. Its the record company execs who still get the biggest cut, unless it's a proper independent label, which I suspect would have the reach in the market nowadays. I agree Airlie that people listening to new music is good, personally music has been a consistent theme in my life since I was about 13 years old and I embrace a lot of different genres.
