I dunno - surely having no hair is a great way to fight dandruff?

I don't see the problem with a player smoking, it just seems these last few decades people want to get offended over anything and everything, within the last five years it has got worse. We've moved from the days of government health ads to social media frenzy, through tv and tabloid propaganda. Mention a cigarette and suddenly people have every moral opinion imaginable for the so called health of the human race, as next we will all be clambering to photograph a professional sportsman eating a burger or drinking a pint of beer. I'm surprised in this moral health conscious age, we still allow the human race to drive something that is a potential killing machine every time they turn the key in their wheeled machine. While medics are constantly scrapping the remains up of the latest attempt at roadkill, every minute of every day. The shocking stupidity of human clones, purely because most brains don't have the capacity to think beyond a picture, it's more important for them to be offended and tell us all about it via social media, like a plague of locus passing though a field. I saw the Daily Malice mentioned somewhere in this thread, why am i not surprised.

I wish I could transfer national teams with the likes of him and Rooney playing for us.

It's a fear mongering rag that still publishes articles about cannabis being lethal and addictive. <doh>

I guess the middle class Marxists aren't any better, they like to tell people what they can and cannot do regarding their bodies as well.

a player smoking ofcourse it diminishes their athletic ability even a couple, might not be by a big margin but it definitely does, I wouldn't want a city player smoking, they're athletes, they're bodies should be a temple, there's no excuse
same goes with drinking, but then again one drink compared to a cigarette, the cigarette is coherently more harmful
    and I'm a smoker, but I'm not a professional in a sport

Hiya TF, hope you're keeping well. I am doing just fine. I have 2 close family members that smoke and it does come down to personal choice. I can't change their behaviour. But it does worry me as I know the harm that smoking causes. x

    Spot on.

These guys are paid massive amounts of money and are meant to do everything within their power to be the best professional sportsman there is. If you look at the British cycling team, its all about marginal gains. The gains they make by 1 change are at times immeasurable but when they put them all together, its the difference between Gold and no medal. Same for Team Sky.

Smoking has been linked to deaths (as opposed to one forum user said) and in fact the death rate from heart attacks immediately dropped after the smoking ban came into force - well before doctors predicted. Its not just cancer, its the irritation to the lungs and the stress on the blood vessels - leads to a reduction in VO2 capacity - the very thing that is tested at Hull Uni when the Hull City team go there.

You can quote all these old players who used to smoke and were still fantastic - they played in a time when athletic ability was not so important. The professionalism of the sport was not there. Things have changed (as has the money).

Jeez football has come along way since my day, it is now demanded that they are athletes and become like blue blooded robots! (The Worlds End)...what a sad place we live, that our sportsman now have to be clones. So whilst many parts of the world is blowing the crap out of one another we just sit back and lecture in our cosy little world of the internet about whether our footballers can smoke. I think some people have been watching to much Sky or reading to many tabloids.

    load of bollocks

so you're saying footballers shouldn't be athletes? football should be behind the rest of sport in fitness, who cares about huge contracts players are on, they are footballers not athletes

**** the vo2 tests, the anti gravity treadmills and have a pint or two before the game

leave the athletes to sports like cycling, tennis etc

    shame on football
    ?

and let's not even discuss our teams or what we had for dinner or go on holiday since wars are currently happening?

I understand your sentiment, it is true that what is happening in many parts of the world is really devastating. However, if you think like that - what they hell are we doing paying to watch men kick a ball around on some grass? It isn't important really, is it? And why even bother coming on to a forum to discuss football? There are clearly more worthwhile things to do.

But really, it is important, because its enjoyment and that's what life is for. As the stakes are raised and the fact that most players are mercenaries collecting a huge salary, they have a responsibility to the chairman, manager and fans. The watching of Sky extends the enjoyment, a lot of football is enjoying the discussion about it. Footballers are in a position of privilege - this comes with responsibilities.

As far as the marginal gains in British cycling goes I remember someone telling me that they even went as far as making sure the youngsters coming through flossed their teeth. It may sound daft but all the little things add up. Hence why we are at the top of the world in cycling and not so much in football and other sports.

Aww what's up lads, upset with an opposite opinion. It's called suppression of dissent. Just because i don't think like you, you must be right, because the whole social media world is behind you, oh smoking lets all get offended. LOL...yeah i talk s**t but only to get the response i knew you would give. Athlete's though, since when, since Sky dictated the modern game. When was the last time England won a world cup...when they smoked!

On another note I can't like or dislike posts... Can you have a look at it please? Also keep getting kicked off being told to sign in when the server gets busy and half the time I can't see pictures when using my phone with a message saying guests can't view images.
