Right, I absolutely love film, so:

    Yes, Pans Labyrinth fantastic film.

    Donnie darko
    Sling Blade (Billy Bob Thorton)
    Fargo
    Thin Red Line
Dead Mans shoes (most Shane Meadows stuff)
    Kes
    Good will hunting
one flew over the cuckoos next
    Central station (Brazilian)
    London to brighton
    Nil by mouth
    blade runner
    District 13.

There are so many, and don't let subtitles get in the way, some fantastic foreign films out there that offer someone different from gritty kithchen sink, and custume drama, which we brits are a bit stuck in, but nevrtheless good at.

Oh, which reminds me. Kill List, fairly new British horror/thriller/kithchen sink drama, quite brilliant in my opinion.

That reminds me, I saw this quite good film a couple of years back. I believe it was called Onside. It's Iranian and about an Iranian woman who disguises herself as a man to watch Iran vs Bahrain in the Fifa 2006 World Cup qualifiers as women are not allowed in the stadium.

That clip, is from the TV series.

The film Only you, is a great way to get into this mad world, that Rumiko Takahashi created (she also did Ranma 1/2 which is equally bizarre), but before/if you do, you need to understand something of what the hell is going on, so this link might help. I cannot recommend this series of films enough to someone like yourself, I think you would love it!

A few off ther top of my head:-

Fritz Lang's "Metropolis." Probably the most visually powerful film ever?

    Shawshank Redemption

    Some like it hot

    Blade Runner

    Mesrine (Both parts)

    Robin Hood (Errol Flynn version.)

The beat that my heart skipped (Exceptional gangster film with Romain Duris - the French De Niro)

The English patient (Kristen Scott Thomas and Juliette Binoche in the same film -what more could you want? )

    Shane

Once upon a time in the West

Les goutes des autres ~ Gentle comedy which is extremely clever.

    Master & Commander

    Anything with Audrey Tautou in!!!!!!

Curious to read you comments as I've just discovered Anime. Watched "Totoro" with my nephew last week and bought "Ponyo" for when he comes down again next month. They are really interesting filsm and totally different to Disney and not quite so disturbing as the Sylvain Chomet films although "The illusionist" is beautiful to look at . Do you have any other recommendations please?

"The woman in black" is terrifc - easily the most frightening film I've seen and far, far better than the usual, gory , horror fair.

I don't find films scary tbh. I'm into horrors with a good story, not just mindless violence. Is the woman in black any good?.

Yes that's very good. If you liked that - if you haven't already - check out an Italian film called Gomorrah.

Old yes I know, but One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest stands clear at number 1 for me :)
In Brugges, Memento, and 21 at a close second!

It's a great story, believe me. It's not like a modern horror. There are no blood and guts in the original story. This is typical of the spooky type that the Victorians loved and we never see nowadays. Sort of M.R. James on steroids.

EDIT: BTW, it was written by Susan Hill, in 1983, not M.R.James in late Victorian times.
