Automatics are rubbish, if you ever park off road and it rains a bit you're ****ed! They're also a few seconds slower than their manual counterparts in most cases unless you spend a shed load, although they're improving considerably these days just like the diesel fuel system. Though you're quite right about them being boring, if your box isn't designed for performance it will always want to go for the fuel efficient 3rd gear at lower revs meaning you lose traction, where really you should be mincing it round the corners in 2nd
I Hoover up about ten times a day , I only have to see a cat hair on the carpet and I'm at it again even if it's 3 am .. Doesn't help that iv got 4 cats . When I was married as soon as I got home I would have the Hoover out Wife often sad she had just hoovered up and I wod say it didn't look like she had and that she couldn't do it right . Which she couldn't as she wouldn't get into corners or under chairs .. When I was on chemo and to knackered to stand up and Hoover I would shuffle about on my arse and Hoover .. My Macmillan nurse thought I was nuts.. Anyway can't sit on here a day iv just hoovered up , mopped the floor and need to put the rugs back down ..
It depends what sort of automatic you've got, you can always use the tiptronic on the steering wheel if you want to override it.
My Omega Automatic is so comfortable and stress free, driving up to matches is a pleasure in it. But my Vectra 6speed does the journey 15minutes quicker and £30 cheaper. I get 56mpg.
Had a bit of difficulty hiring an automatic when I was last in the UK.Haven't driven a manual since my Triumph Spitfire days in the 70's. Main car now is a Holden Calais with speed control. Just waiting now for the introduction of Auto Steering/ Braking so I can sit back and concentrate on my embroidery while watching the world go by on long Aussie road trips!
You'd get bored in an automatic as you'd no longer have the fun of starting the car an shaking the gearstick to see if you're in neutral about 5 times before going into 1st
I kind of hinted at that in my post, but most autos are sluggish to respond and take an age to change gear even in semi-auto mode... And you still have no clutch for parking off the road! But with saying that, that new vw box they're using on the 1.4tsi engines in the polo, golf, Fabia and Ibiza are meant to change faster than it's possible in a manual, 0.1 of a second or something silly, apparently it takes a racing driver to beat the autos 0-60 time in semi auto mode! So they're definitely getting a lot better in production cars, much like the diesel fuel system. It's crazy to think an auto diesel racecar can beat its petrol counterparts nowadays, albeit in endurance races but still shows the huge progress they've made in the last decade.
The automatic box on the Ferrari Scuderia changes gear faster than the blink of an eye (geeky but apparently true). It is recommended that when sat at traffic lights you should be in neutral and with handbrake on. Not only does it save wear on your clutch, but if you're rear-ended and you are in first, your foot will come off the clutch and you will hit any car in front. And I was always taught to depress the clutch when starting the engine. I don't remember why, but I think it was something to do with it being easier for the engine to turn over (or something). As for weird habits, whenever I make a brew I always have to put fresh water in the kettle.
Hilarious! This just made me laugh out loud in the middle of my office. I always take my trousers and pants down when having a **** but that's as far as my undressing goes.
If I am walking with someone I always position myself to the right of the person I am walking with (if its a group I try to be at the right edge of the group).
first time I tried to drive an auto after an ice storm I had problems. even when you are stationary there is still power to the driving wheels, so stopped at a traffic light facing up hill the car gracefully turned around through 180 degrees. I soon learned to stick it neutral when stopped on ice to prevent a recurrence.
I never **** in public toilets But it just doesn't feel right to have my shirt on, I probably haven't done it since I was 11 or 12. There was a similar thread on another forum, and there were 4 or 5 others who did the same
