Absolutely spot on. It is these kinds of explorations that often lead to further scientific discoveries. If humans don't destroy the planet or are wiped out by a super virus they will need to move into the galaxy at some point.

At some point mankind will need to leave the planet. The crash happened with the craft trying out a new type of fuel. This kind of exploration is vital imo.
