- Hessle Old Boys, Kingburn Athletic & Hessle RUFC all playing at the same time on "Recker" off Park Ave in late 50's/early 60's on Saturday afternoons. A few illegal pints in Darleys afterwards. (when City weren't at home of course !). - North Stand - B.Park ( before clock).....climbing over barrier to grab a seat after paying bugger all & feeling wealthy cheating on the system. - Pubs with off-licences attached & conning(persuading) punters to buy a couple of bottles to circumvent the legal age restrictions - some bloody great sympathetic people around in those days. - battles between 'Essle lads & "Barrow lads" from Hessle Rd at Sat night dances at Hessle Town Hall. Cop Station right next door - never did a bloody thing about the aggro. Fun. - amusement arcades ( especially in Brid) that had those "grab-cranes" that gave you a chance to snaffle a smoke for 1 penny. Rigged..... - packets of 5 "Park Drive" and 5 "Woodbines" - Teledisk (mentioned earlier) in phone booths with 20 kids standing outside after a collective deposit of ( tuppence, threepence) to get best mileage. First song I listened too on that facility was the Everley's "Cathy's Clown". Progressive Hull - ignoring & keeping out the GPO. - "Tapping" phone booths to overcome cost of "long distance" phone calls. - "Spot the Ball" competitions - can't remember which papers had 'em. - A pint of Hull Brewery Mild ( 9 pence) or Bitter (11 pence) , in the "Top House" in Hessle. - Radio Luxembourg", and later "Radio Caroline" to get the best exposure to where it was really happening in music. - The boards along the side of Boothferry Park which put up the half-time scores that impacted whichever league City were in at the time. - Wagstaff, Chilton, Houghton, Butler, Henderson forward line....awesome. - outside "bogs" - muscles in vinegar in grease-proof packets sold in pubs ( mentioned earlier). Sometimes winkles were available, special treat. - roast chestnut vendors on the street - particularly during Hull Fair.
The Beano. It was 65p to 75p when I regularly bought it in the early to mid 00s. (I know even that to a few of you older users that sounds a ridiculous price) Last time I saw a copy, it cost £2... that was at least a year ago though. Same can be said for The Dandy, which now no longer available in print. It's an online comic now.
Same family owns Dundee chippy... the son runs it now Bulliments used to own it, are you sure its there son that has it now? Harry Smiths hot cakes down Perth Street Id frogotten all about that. Some great memories on here, but making me feel old.
Tsk! Stan, it is/was (Tizwaz) called "Knock Off Ginger" Also, as winter is coming, not seen anyone do a "Diddywoman" for a long time
Thinking on, actually, it was “Knock On Ginger”. I think. Do kids do ‘ghost tapping’ anymore? A sophisticated KOG I suppose.
Tying two door-knockers together with cotton, stretched across the street. Then having time to hide before a car came along and worked both 'knockers. Too many cars today - not enough time to get hid up......
Jesus H, what kind of pubs did you go in?! Unless of course you mean "Mussels"?? Sorry TC but that made me laugh!
