ElTigre was talking about DLT wanting to humiliate. I said like so many men its about power. In the context of sexual deviant behaviour. Not so many men in general are like that. In the world of sex offenders they are predominantly male and its a power trip for them. Thats the context. I don't hate men btw. Well not all of them!
Bloody hell. That reminds me of when I worked at Armstrong's in Beverley after I first left school. As a young apprentice I was always been sent by the fitters to the stores which were through the press shop. All the machines in there were operated by women who were totally wild. If you got through unmolested it was a victory. Worst torment involved a narrow necked glass bottle, your manhood and the universal realisation that no sixteen year old boy can go for longer than 10 minutes without having a tumescent episode.
So you were sexually harrassed in the workplace and made to feel uncomfortable about it. You didn't take any action. Fair enough. But so ****ing what? This doesn't mean everyone should take the same course of inaction, even if it takes years for them to pluck up the courage to act. Moreover, it wasn't just some factory worker who ushered her into a corridor and groped her. If it had been, she might just have told him to **** off. No, it was a bloke who was not only physically intimidating at 6'2" or whatever he is, but was also a household name, and I suggest she felt far more uncomfortable than you did in your job at the wholesalers. I hope more ****s like DLT get done. They're a disgrace to our gender.
Agreed. But my point is women can get away with things men can't. Anyone regardless of age, sex, celebrity status should be prosecuted.
This raises an interesting point and one of my current hot potatos. I do think everyday sexism has now gone full circle and I'm bemused when I see people like Laura Bates appearing on television talking of the problem of everyday sexism. Of course she is absolutely right to highlight these things, and I agree entirely that "everyday sexism" is no more acceptable than physical sexual assault. A line needs to be drawn, quite rightly. The funny thing is I see everyday sexism in the workplace on a daily basis. But, not by men, by women. We have now reached the point where it is entirely acceptable - indeed almost compulsory - to point out that men are stupid, can't multitask, are useless, can't concentrate, and are generally objects of ridicule. It is quite rightly sexist to say that women are bad drivers, and so it should be sexist to come out with the tired old "men are useless" argument. It's no less crass, and no less offensive. I hear women making sexual comments about what they would do to this bloke, or that bloke - comments that if made by me about a woman would quite rightly see me hauled up before HR. Yet it's okay for a woman to do this. It's okay for a woman to have a picture of a bare chested David Beckham on her desk or computer screen. You try sticking a bikini-clad model on your desk and see how that goes. It may seem trivial but that's precisely the point - it isn't trivial at all, it's getting worse, and it needs to be understood that "all men are useless" is no less offensive or unacceptable than "all women are slags". Equality doesn't have exceptions.
Sky News ‏@SkyNews The suspended prison sentence given to Dave Lee Travis will be reviewed by the Attorney General, after a complaint it was too lenient.
They only get away with it because men let them. And this is because we are still constrained by traditional gender constructs, both imagined and actual.
As well they might seeing as its a recognised medical ailment. Men have much crappier immune systems than women, so that "cold" really does affect us more than women.
They 'get away with it' as the kind of 'incidents' being discussed are not a big ****ing deal, and don't need the intervention of the long arm of the law. Everything is magnified and blown out of proportion these days, 'victims' appearing everywhere.
More annoying is that when people come into work and say they 'have the flu'. No you havent, you've got a cold. If you had the flu you wouldnt be able to get out of bed. The classic rule is if someone dropped a £50 note in front of you and you can bend down to pick it up then you havent got the flu. Influenza is a very serious virus, you on the other hand HAVE GOT A f**ING COLD. And then people who say they're allergic to foods when they just dont like them. Of course there are genuine allergies but there was a study last year that demonstrated something like 8 out of 10 ( i forget the exact figure) of claimed allergies are nothing of the sort. Why is there this tendency now to over exagerate illness / conditions?
