I've just googled the bloke and it is him. A relative of a friend, met him once I think, can't remember why. It used to think it was something a bit flash didn't it? Was it a bag of ****? Never drank or ate in the place.
I had to discontinue my line of clothing, apparently the people at Princes Quay wanted a 'traditional' Santa. I don't plan my clothes in advance, but I'll let anybody know where I am and I'll buy you a pint if I see you.
What, not even water taxis - you saw my dilemma on the foreshore ? I'll take a rain-check. Hope the night goes well
The Fox and Coney - that brings back good memories. I'm not from South Cave but a few school mates moved there and we had some cracking nights on the piss in South Cave. Which of them had the pool table that I lost too much money on - The Bear or The Fox and Coney?
Up in the conservatory I think. They've fitted a jukebox in there too. Which is a good idea considering the music choice last time was whatever crap was on Vince's iPod. I can now confirm for all you lager drinkers that there'll be Fosters, Carling and Peroni on tap, plus a range of bottled beers like Bud, Corona and some others. I'll be on Cupalibres anyway, so it matters nought to me. It's shaping up to be a good night, I'm really looking forward to it. And in an interesting twist, the Bear is closing on Thursday, as well as the Red Hawk in Brough closing for 8 weeks due to refurbishment. Come one, come all...
Why is the Bear shutting? Is this the revolving door of **** ownership by Enterprise Inns? They've already demonstrated they can't run a piss up in a brewery. I wish your mate well, but it will be very difficult once he moves onto a standard Enterprise contract, from whatever was initially agreed. I guess that will be why the Bear will be vacant - tenancy finished and not wanting to renew. South Cave desperately needs a free hold pub. Are you actually living in Harrogate? My Mrs is from Pannal.
Does the young lass still work there, Becky I think her name was. Once asked her for a screw driver (vodka and fresh orange) and she looked at me put out before asking what I wanted one of them for
The Fox and Coney was actually doing well not all that long ago, the rooms were usually full and the bar/restaurant took decent money and the old owner got decent money for it when they moved on(the brewery tried to get them to go back once it started to go backwards, but they already had a new pub and din't want to go back). They are **** deals though, my local has also died due to nobody being able to make money out of it and it's currently being converted into a house.
The Hotham Arms? I thought that was doing ok with food? Bollocks, I'd never convince the Mrs to move back to my village of birth with no amenities!
Was that quite a while ago? Or was that under Enterprise Inns ownership? They are too restrictive, barrels have to bought through Enterprise at hugely inflated prices.
That was a while ago. I always thought it was the better of the 2 in N Cave. White Hart is a bit ****e, or it was, that may have changed as it's now the only one.
It will have been a fair while ago, it's had a couple of different tenants in since. The Swan was good, I really miss it. I went in the White Hart on Friday night, but it's the first time I've been in for months, it's a bit tatty and the food's ****. It's a better laugh up at the sports club, particularly on a weekend if the cricket team are at home(and it's cheap).
The Gregory's I think were the last independent owners I can remember of the Fox and Coney - may be those? Re White Hart - Some things never change!
The Bear is shutting because the owner (Pat) doesn't want to run it any more. He's a bit lazy. Plus his daughter and business partner got married and moved away, so he's pretty much running it by himself and he can't be doing with it. He's a nice bloke, but when you're a landlord working 15 hours a week it isn't really on. The Bear would be a great project for anybody willing to spend some money on it, but getting Enterprise to sell would be a miracle in itself. I agree about needing a freehold, but unfortunately Enterprise won't sell one without selling the other as it would create competition they don't want. Enterprise are in a lot of debt, so you'd think they would bite hands off for deals. The previous owner of the Fox was a disaster. It all looked good on the face of it, but the owner was balls deep in cocaine and was splurging all his money on showing off and pointless renovations. The new landlord is sensible, down to earth and has a good business plan. And he's put my best mate in as GM, which is a good move considering his experience. I don't really want to divulge his identity, but he was/is heavily involved in the park and ride business that operates on Priory Park. The plans they have for the Fox are pretty impressive and he's taken it on to give South Cave a bit more of a community feel, which the village badly lacks. I do live in Harrogate yes, but only since the start of July, I work up in Ripon.
I'm so glad it went wrong for vince. He was a first class **** and thought he was something special as he produced music in the 80's. it was great in fox 5 years ago when Phil and Nat were in charge. It's always been best as a village pub, good food, and a bit of live music
