Nonsense; except for an ex- mod losing the plot, the argument (speaking out for the lost children) is reasonable. I see, this morning, that there is a collective American determination growing to make change.

Why infer replies are racist in their intent? Ellewood has focussed his argument on his own people, so response can only address that - the reality being that if there is national (racial) abuse, then it is self- inflicted!

What do you want people to say? The fact is that nothing posted on here will ever change anything. The debate has been opened by the actions of a sad sick man, who in his madness has destroyed the lives of far more than the innocent children.

Heres my view and if you do not agree thats life. I watched the news, felt the grief and then posted on here about different things. Someone moaned about the lack of hot dogs. Red cards and a scuffle between players. I sat and watched Strictley and Lisa Reilly got kicked off, she was bawling her head off, her emotions touched me and I felt sorry for her. I watched the Sports Personallity of the year and smiled at the memory of a fantastic year for the country. So should I start every post expressing my sympathy? Life does not work like that.

Obama has a very good opportunity to make a huge difference. He's not facing re-election and so does not have to pander to 'special interests' such as the NRA.

Good point, but it could effect the next Democrat Senator's chances.

I'm not clued up on American politics, but surely something as big as this would have to go through the Senate and there will be opposition to it.

I find the United States' approach to risk mitigation baffling. 9/11 resulted in a collective trauma and subsequent hysteria unseen since the Cuban Missile Crisis (possibly ever), and led to an unending campaign of preventive war, foreign internal defence, targeted assassinations, state building, draconian Patriot Act legislation, the re-election of the most obviously incompetent and ideological administration in living memory, all because Americans by and large could not begin to accept that blowback happens, that laws of physics apply in foreign policy.

When it comes to firearm policy, those same people who cheered on these policies won't move an inch, on the basis of Libertarian philosophy which by and large they apply incredibly selectively (ie, guns=good, abortions, anti-corporatism=pinko).

But then this is America - where Christians are capitalists, pro-lifers are pro-death penalty, lovers of "freedom" support their own domination, and the poorest people vote for the wealthiest candidate. Schizoid nation.

    Bit of thread-drift here.

So I'll just get in a whinge here: why do so many of our lazy obese ****s gorge themselves on Krispy Kreme and McdONALDS fodder?

You only need to see the waddling blubber buckets infesting US malls to see what a state you get into.

I see no racism nor do I see any intent by Fez to be racist.

There is a chance it seems that we renew the assault weapons ban. If the democrats follow through on their talk they will introduce a renewed ban. If they are serious there would be a chance it passes as the Brady Bill and the original assault weapons ban both passed after negotiation. If they did it and it passed it would probably be for new purchases and already purchased guns would be grandfathered in. Last time a ban was in place it applied only to fully automatic assault weapons and most semi automatic weapons were allowed to be sold. The way around this was you purchased a conversion kit easily available at every gun show. An assault weapons ban would also need to make the conversion kits illegal then it would be effect over time as the assault weapons out there eventually would go bad. Assault weapons are not made like my grandfathers weapons. They do not last as long so eventually they would be worthless if you were to ban new parts being sold.

    Some numbers.

Last year there were 5,459,240 new firearms manufactured in the United States. An additional 3,252,404 firearms were imported to the United States. So a total of 8,711,644 new guns entered US households.
The FBI estimates there are over 200 million guns in the US.
25% of US households have guns. There are 114,235,996 households in the US. So 28,589,999 households have guns. These are all estimates so on average every home with a gun has 9 to 10 guns.
Of the 200 million guns it is believed that there are over 4 million assault weapons in US hands.
Of the 200 million guns it is believed that there are over 70 million handguns in US hands.
An estimated 500,000 guns are stolen each year
There were 52,447 deliberate and 23,237 accidental non-fatal gunshot injuries in the United States during 2000.
The majority of gun-related deaths in the United States are suicides, with 17,352 (55.6%) of the total 31,224 firearm-related deaths in 2007 due to suicide, while 12,632 (40.5%) were homicide deaths.
66.9% of all homicides in the United States were perpetrated using a firearm.

Are you talking about Charlton Heston? Pretty sure he's been dead for a while now. But that would be a turnout for the books if so

We could talk about banning automatic weapons until we're blue in the face and Beckham declares he wants to finish his career in East Yorkshire sending corners into the box directly onto Macca's arm and into the net but the problem few are addressing is mental illness. It's such a huge problem and nobody wants to talk about it because it makes them uncomfortable and too close to home. The easy argument is, "Ban guns!!!" Some merit is there but I think that's the smaller problem of the two.
