The argies were making noises in the late seventies and jim callahans government sent a naval vessel there to warn them off - Thatcher neglected to do this resulting in "her finest moment" and several young men on both sides losing there lives along with the other disfigured and injured ones (remember who was governing the argies at the time were also right wingers). Also you are showing a certain tory trait by the selfish "thatcher looked after" statement or to put it in laymans terms "I'm alright Jack it does not matter who else she is f**king with" Sorry Bill but you are showing your colours here mind

This is partially true...........................


As for the content of the thread....each generation has had a chance to change the situation, but it never did....

This problem was talked about many years ago, in the Powell speech...when as it happens the pensioners of today were the youth, and nobody took it serious...and the situation has gone from there, with each generation expecting the youth to make up for their own past miss-judgements....
 
I am a pensioner who was lucky enough to have another pension that is higher than the state one as well as also getting the state one

Bill no I was not part of it - I do not see that is relevant but I am sorry to hear that you are haunted by it - the point I am trying to make is that it should never have happened in the first place - Thatcher was advised to send a warship down there the same as Callahan had done a few years earlier when the argies started showing interest. This she neglected to do whether that was to emulate her hero Winston Churchill or pure incompetence only she can tell you that. If she had indicated that we would not stand for a takeover whatever you want to call it then the Faulklands war probably would never have happened, all of those people would be alive and as you know personaly combatants would not be mentally affected by subsequent events

I am also sorry for the part about the tory trait etc its just that I get really angry as the tories have affected my life at every turn since 1980.
 
Doesn't matter if you have made sure you will be alright, unless you have hard gold/diamonds, everything can change. Governments tell lies, change conditions. Banks/Insurance Policy Makers change rules & conditions so they NEVER lose money,only the Investors/Policy Holders. You just have to look at what has happened since Robert Maxwell ROBBED Daily Mirror pensioners of their pensions, rules are never secure enough, Governments open to lobbying etc. When billofengland & myself started our working lives we had to accumulate 44years of NIC to retire at 65years, now you only need 30 years NIC, but you don't retire until 68years old, how is that financially sound? I may have missed something!!
