The poor buggers have it bred into them that their leader is some sort of god.

The only ones that aren't crying are the ones that haven't the strength due to malnutrition.

    Not even Vaclav Havel?

Surly that is how we all wept when we heard the news that big Vac had passed away yesterday?

by coincidence, Kim Jong Il, Gadaffi and Sadam Hussein all died at 69 (years old, that is).

I agree with OLM. It's amusing how even the state media is using propaganda (in a way) to potray this. The capital Pyongyang is where the rich live and outside of their it's absoloute poverty and a large amount of people rebel against the regime and often risk their lives to cross the heavy border. I really hope the country changes for the better from this although its highly unlikely!

If anyone's interested heres a 4 part documentary from BBC newsnight on NK. It's won various awards and also inspired my dissertation:

Fascinating that, never seen it before (watched all four).

Remarkable that they let them in, considering the secrecy and paranoia in that place. Remarkable also that they staged so much like that actually believed that it would stick. I heard they got particularly upset when Google Earth took some nice, detailed snaps of their country. Dreadful really.

On a side note, how uninterested in any news or feature on Newsnight can Jeremy Paxman be??
