I guess you don't use a browser much then as I find Internet Explorer unusable. To use Internet Explorer over Chrome or Firefox (even when nerfed) is erm.. not common. Let us know how you get on

I'm an IT-savvy guy but I can't understand all the fuss about browsers. The browser just displays the web page and gives you a few options about how to display it, why does something so simple get people so worked up? Can anyone explain to me what about IE is 'unusable'? I'm aware that everyone hates it but I don't get why, I still use it just because I'm used to the settings on it and see no reason to change to a new one and have to reconfigure it. But really is there that much difference between them?

I don't know about the unusable element of it myself, I know my mum has switched to Chrome because some sites don't work properly with the new IE though so I'm going to guess holiday sites or online photobook sites (where you go and they print you a hard copy up as a proper book like for wedding albums and stuff) as the rest she uses are the same as me. As I'm still on WinXP it's not really been an issue for me as I haven't updated the my browser version since they started optimising things for Win7 unless something has stopped working. I'm like you, I don't like changing for the sake of it, but if I have to change (like I do now) then I try to get the best option at the time.

My aversion to IE is on the security basis, not that I knowingly use any sites more unreliable than this one, but just to be on the safe side because of the amount of electronic transactions I make.

I suspect the security thing though is just like the old argument that Macs were better because they couldn't get viruses. It was bollocks, they could get them, it was just that because so few people used Apple's OS it wasn't worth the effort for the majority of malicious virus writers to make them attack the vulnerabilities there when it would take the same work to get at Windows machines so there were fewer viruses to be caught. I'm guessing as more people start using Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc that the dodgy websites will start being set up to exploit their weaknesses rather than/as well as the weaknesses in IE.

I think the adblocking software you can stick in Chrome/Firefox is generally seen as much better than the IE equivalents, probably because they tend to be single products from the developers rather than multiple options from 3rd parties. I'm not aware of Microsoft providing one for IE for example that stops those annoying videos on the HDM site. That's probably a big contributor because if you ask people what pisses them off on the internet the most common complaint is going to be adverts that force themselves on you (ie pop unders/overs and auto playing videos)

I'm not IT savvy, I just speak from experience.

It's unusable as it freezes on a number of banner ads, forwarding etc. It doesn't display pages correctly in a large number of instances, it's slow, you can't use all the security addins that other browsers have, it struggles with flash and lastly but really not leastly, it's microsoft and is sub-standard out-of-date software. Oh, and it doesn't have a Linux version*.

Why would anyone use it when there a number of far better browsers on the market.

Let me ask you Premier league... what car do you have ? Think about the question as it's obvious where I'm leading, or if you only have a bike, think about other similar analogies. So, especially when software like browsers are free (other than IE as you have to pay for the OS to have it), why would you settle for cackness ?

    Just saying like.

*Well, it does sorta work on Linux if you use VirtualBox.

I'm using Firefox, with Adblocker on its by far the cleanest looking web-browser. Have used chrome regularly but find it hard to get good adblocking on there, without fibre-optic its faster than Firefox but other than that have no reason to use it now

I found Internet Explorer fine for use but I do miss the add ons and in going back to Firefox I have found that it is back to normal so That is now what I'll be using from now on ;) Plus I use browsers a lot for various things, IE really isn't that bad and better than Chrome.

IE 10 all the way ... no need for "ad block" etc ,.. as all flash etc is blocked anyway lol ... overall Ive been an avid IE user since IE6 .. IE9 really set it apart IMO .. get rid of toolbars , get rid of add ons and just see the net for what it is .. its fine by me unless you want to wait for the diff between 0.1 sec and 0.4 sec for a page to load
