the word croggy originates from the word cross-bar on a man's bike. "Wanna croggy?" meant "Would you care for a ride on my cross-bar?" However it had other connotations when the question was put to the girls.
My accent only gets me into trouble when I have to say "Sports Boats". I didn't find it out until I sold twenty earlier this year. The girl who does my marketing just takes the piss about it all of the time. She reckons that our accent is the direct opposite of Aussie.
Used to say 'siling down' for raining hard when i was young - a danish friend reckons thats pure viking!!
Breadcake has cause me the most problems - when I lived/worked in Portsmouth I got the piss taken out if me constantly for the term Breadcake. I even showed my colleagues a google street view of 'bread cakes galore' on Hessle Road and they still thought I was making it up.
That's brilliant. I will send that on to them - they still won't understand though bloody southerners
Nice OP We Are Hull! I move back to Hull tomorrow after living just outside of Lincoln for 17 years. That piece will help me to readjust to life in Hull...LOL! I'll practise those 'werds' as I travel down the rerd!
Snap! I don't have much of a Hull accent, if any. However, when I meet new students who are from Hull, I always ask them what part of Hull are they from. Every single time without fail they look puzzled and say 'how do you know I'm from Hull' ... love it! Try this one below... 'Drah whart wharn'
one of my favourite words was chuddin' "wanna go chuddin'?" = we're gonna raid the orchards, you wanna go with us?
You're right...I saw it for the first time this April when I visited my sister in Hull. It was compiled by a few students and had a few photos of them around City Square. When my sis & brother-in-law get back from their trip, I'll get 'em to scan the booklet & I'll post on here - it was hilarious. In the meantime : http://www.bbc.co.uk/humber/content/articles/2005/02/14/voices_hullspeak_glossary.shtml
Naah, was originally published by Dave Whatt about 20 years ago. Him of the Hull Underground poster fame. Everything since has just been a rip-off of his work.
You may be right, although the photos in the booklet I saw looked like they were from the late 60s, but I could be wrong...
