Loads of people say that but I really don't get it. What do you want in there? It's got loads of different clothes shops (I'm not interested in them but most people are obviously) loads of eateries, it's got a Game, a gigantic Tesco, an Argos, a couple of toy shops for the kids, a cinema, a sport direct, etc. Serious question, what else do you think it needs? Agree with this really, especially the bold part. Particularly among people my age (student age) it's just kind of accepted that everyone will say the place is ****, but it's never explained why. There's never a good reason it's just '****'. Also I agree with pretty much everything dazzar86 has been saying. He clearly knows what he's on about. The City is nowhere near as bad as some will have you believe.
Back in the day, there were loads of individual stores in Hull that offered something genuinely different, there was Transvaal down Spring Bank, there was that bloke in the Kings Market, we had our own independent department store(Willis Ludlow), we had our own supermarket(Clifford Dunn), yet it's all been lost, unfortunately. As has Schofields of Beverley, which my missus used to run.
It doesn't help that the first thing you see coming out of the train/bus station is a large boarded-up building.
My main issue with Hull's city centre is that it's absolutely dead in an evening, if you walk through Leeds city centre on an evening it's absolutely thriving with people in the bars and restaurants and most shops are open til at least 7pm. If you walk through Hull city centre after 5pm there's a good chance you won't see anyone ohter than a couple of blokes having a *** outside Empress. Maybe it's because not many people live in Hull city centre compared to places like Leeds? As for the shopping, I can't really comment, as I'm far too cool to buy my clothes from high street chains. Though I would say that these pound stores and "Christmas shops" blight other city centres too (I'd even go as far as to say Sheffield has more than Hull), they're a bit like tabloid newspapers, everybody despises them, but enough people use them for them to stay in business...
There are certainly plenty of flats available in the City Centre, unfortunately they stay empty as the rents charged are excessive in relation to the City's average wages. I live on the Marina and have to say I never feel compelled to wander into town after 7ish due to, as you say, lack of anything being open. And, unfortunately, the dodgy characters that stagger towards you looking threatening. I think they're trying to do something about this, but not getting very far.
Used to love that place and the bowling alley, we'd play pool, have a few beers and watch a film there back in the day
Ahhh, Megabowl! Used to love that place. Is Deep Pan Pizza still about or did they knock that down too?
as an ex pat i am wondering what on earth is the interchange? has st stephens square gone? if so where do kids go for a good old fashioned knee trembler??
Interchange is just the posh word given to the train staion/bus station hybrid we now have. Miles better than that collapsing shelter we used to have.
Not sure, haven't been down there in years, am assuming so. Megabowl and Jazzbo Browns was a great place to chill-out on a weekday afternoon, pool table and barstaff to yourself, couldn't go wrong!
Depends where you go. I was out round Hull after i got back from Leicester and it was quite full round Lowgate, Bob Carvers and the pubs down near the Holy Trinity Church up to Sugar Mill and Mission. I dunno why we compare ourselves to Leeds and Sheffield. FFS they've had much more funding than we've had and are massive cities. We're smaller but still not a bad nightlife. Shops on the other hand we can't compete with.
Shoulda pointed out that I meant on a week night. Saturday's it's full and sometimes it is on a Thursday, but other than that it's pretty dead. I went to a gig at Fruit on a Tuesday night and we ended up in Napoleon's afterwards because it was the only place still open.
Greenwoods moving because the rent might be cheaper? Lease may not have been extended? Who knows, but moving just around the corner won't make any difference for Greenwoods. If you're a Greenwoods shopper, then you're a Greenwoods shopper. Fairly dated attire for the 'older' market.

As a Leeds fan I would have thought it would have reminded you of home. My last visit to Elland Rd took in Holbeck and Beeston, where they were still clearing the back to backs. Mercifully, I didn't see anyone plotting to detonate a bomb. Even if I had, I'm not sure I could have kept a straight face at the 'EE bah goom' accent and pyjamas combo!
Had the misfortune to spend some time in Leicstan centre before the game on Saturday Identikit, bland and insipid place, albeit monied. Very much in the shadow of Nottingham I'm afraid which is much more lively and stylish. The ubiquitous beggars and poundshops abound in Leicstan. Didn't see Lineker senior but was impressed with the size of the fruit market
I have to admit it's been a while since I've been down there but it was a good place to go, no idea what it's like now but have some good memories like yourself and Tigerboy do.
Beeston, now there's a hole. Nearly rented a flat in that lovely Greenhouse development they've plonked right in the middle of it. Never felt more unsafe than walking through there on a night.
