Figo was brilliant in 2006. Was one of the reasons they got to the semi finals.

Sneijder was superb in 2010, easily the best player of the tournament, not Forlan who actually won it.

If Cruyff is considered for only one tournament without anyone questioning it, why can't people pick Sneijder?

    1. One great World Cup out of one is a better record than one great one out of two played.
    2. One of them is an all-time great who effectively changed football, and it ain't Sneijder.

Rivaldo was better at world cups, but has hardly had a mention.

I picked Mathaus and Xavi and centre midfield for a more balance.

Maradona only really had one truly great World Cup, 1986. In 1982 he was average, 1990 was alright and 1994 we all know the story. Does that mean he should be below Cruyff in the pecking order?

Rivaldo is suspended from any "best of" teams for 1,000 years.

I don't understand how you picked Matthaus based on 1998 onwards like you originally said. In 1998 he was past his best.

Rivaldo has no chance of getting in a best of team in my life, after what he did against Turkey.

You're judging him by astronomical standards there. By human standards he was very good in 1990.

But even then surely my point still stands?

    2 out of 4 isn't as good as 1 out of 1?

Anyone who's has two good World Cups has done pretty well. If you happen to have played in four, then chances are you're going to be past it by the time you play in the fourth one (and in some cases stoned off your tits as well).

Anyway, one great World Cup counts for a lot - but was Sneijder 'great' in 2010? I accept that he played well in 2010 - but not on that other level that Cruyff reached in 1974 or Maradona in 1986. (I searched my old emails and found one in which I picked my top 5 players from that World Cup, and I only had him fourth.)

I thought he comfortably the best player in the whole tournament.

He scored 5 goals, picked up 4 MOTM awards, he essentially dragged Holland to the final himself. Joint top scorer.

Too bad they decided to abandon any forms of good football for the final.

Because it's amazing to play at a world cup at 37 for a top nation. I did pick him on past performances. But I wanted a balance team instead of shoehorning a 10 into centre midfield.

Maradona did a lot worse things in his career then Rivaldo did, but people are still picking him. Although the Turkey incident was twatish.

In 82 he was battered and kicked to bits- that tells you all you need to know.

    Wot no Nelinho?

Locking forward to the film of WC78 next Sat.

Played in southern hemisphere winter, tickertape a go go, by no means a typical world cup but one full of character.

You know that if you stick the norry on someone you're taking an early bath so you might as well do a proper job.

He should have connected with the bridge of Materazi's beak and sparko'd him clean out.

    Nutting someone in the chest?

GTF, where's he learnt that from?

I was confused by that at the time. One of the weirdest headbutts i've ever seen. Did he think he could stop his heart or something?

    Good team that Jezz

    I'd have Nesta in there.

    Baresi is another great defender.
