It is a shame mate, I think it's in soldier's best interests to take the pay out in one lump sum, it's only a matter of time before the Military Pensions are scrapped anyhow.
My cousin did 22 years in the Royal Navy. He finished up as CPO. He's looking at 49/60th's of his pay at 55. If he gets it that is.
I'm sure the current lot won't have much to worry about, especially the ones leaving in the next few years. My mate got £140k because he was medically discharged, got pool cue wrapped round his head on a night out and started talking in his sleep after it, the nature of the job was top secret so he was lobbed out in case he started chatting about graft in his sleep He was only 22 at the time and pissed the lot up the wall, think he's working in a bar now, miserable as ****.
Not sure myself which is why I've gone with dryed goods, stuff that will keep. This is the first time i've done it myself mate. Got another couple of big shops before Christmas so I'm going to add to it. Got some washing powder that was on offer while there this afternoon. Saw they had a cage for donations at Morrisons but I'll drop mine in personally as I just don't trust people not to dip in twoc stuff.
Find it strange that politicos and journos together with various pressure groups get up in arms about the nanny state when they created it in the first place with their "help for the poor", underprivileged, etc which they raised in their newspapers/reports etc, so together they created the whole thing. Charity wise my efforts for food banks goes to the Salvation Army.
What utter tripe. Just because you are poor you have to live like a hermit and go without everything. Some poor people need a phone and its a bit rich for someone who can afford these things to say you cant live a life because your poor. What an attitude too the less fortunate people of our society. hang your head in shame..
I was medically discharged as well mate, according to my service record, due to psychological reasons. Never got nowt near what your mate got like. Canny ****ing gig that like if you can get it. Would have set me up that.
I had a period of unemployment recently and having a mobile phone was essential in looking for work as the application process for some companies involved sending and receiving texts. The same is also true of having the internet if you want to look for work every hour of the day rather than just when you can get onto a comp at the library. Everything is online now and you have no choice but to use the internet to look for work. So are you saying that if someone spends money on these so that they can work and find a way out of poverty they should not be allowed help? Or what about people who do work and find that the cost of living cuts have left them on the breadline despite the fact that they work hard for a living?
Good on you Bri. I hadn't thought of doing this, but even just a few packets and tins can make a big difference to those who genuinely need it.
Yeah he was in Berlin on short term detachment at the time. Think there was other stuff wrong with him as well mind. Maybe it was insurance payout rather than severance pay, maybe a bit of both. Liverpool fan as well, poor sod.
