Yeah Brazil haven't played in ages hence why they're so low, England have so they've gotten points and risen in the rankings, it's just like a league really

Working by how many games a team has won seems a daft way to do it, it ultimately leads to false positions in some cases. England aren't ****, but to claim that they are ranked 3rd in the world shows how daft this current system is.

    no and no.

    the olympics are not counted.

    youth teams do not count.

adjustments to the previous rankings are caused by games in july 2008 no longer counting plus games in july 2009 2010 2011 counting for less and points for any games played in july 2012 being added in.

For every game you play you get basic points based on the result itself.

Those points are then multiplied by a number determined by the opposition (beating Spain has a higher multiple than beating Andorra for example).

Those points are then multiplied by a number depending on whether the game was a friendly or not, and on the level of competition/tournament. (Beating Spain in a friendly scores lower than beating them in a qualifying game, which scores lower than beating them in the finals of a tournament. International tournaments also have relative standings, so beating someone in the Euros has a higher score than beating someone in the Asian Cup because Europe is considered a stronger region)

The score is then multiplied again based on how long ago the game was played. Not sure of the scale on the current rankings that consider 4 years' worth of results, but it used to be multiplied by 8 for the last 12 months, 7 for the year before that, etc down to 1 for the results from up to 8 years ago.

Brazil are ****ed because they've not played many competitive games, and they don't have to qualify for the World Cup so they're not going to play many for the next 2 years either. Argentina are handicapped a bit because they've been playing 3 seperate squads as their senior squad, obviously by the time you get down to the 40th and 50th players available for selection your results are going to be ropier than they should be.
