One of my cousins is the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards (Sir Philip Mawer - educated at Hull Grammar).....nowt to do wi' me!
A couple of relatives on my dad's side have been tracing the family tree and apparently I'm related to one of England's most notorious murderers - a woman who killed about 18 of her own kids (lucky I'm here really.) They also found that in the 19th century most of the family were gypsies - Can't wait for Goose Fair in Nottingham!!
One of my ancestors got shipped to Australia after robbing someone apparently(he was sentenced to death, but somehow managed to get himself to Australia instead), seems a bit harsh, he only nicked a fiver. The precise charge being - feloniously making an assault in the King's highway upon Richard Hurlock, on the 28th of March, and taking from his person, and against his will, a pocketbook, value 2 shillings and a bank note, value £5, his property. His official defence listed at the court was great, he simply claimed 'I know nothing of this man'. Useless twat.
Maybe it's to do with flags, people who carry flags are standard bearers so there must be some connection.
