I have a mate, who's a detective on the Notts force, who said summat interesting. He says they've had dozens of missing kids on the books, over his ten years, and don't get tuppence to follow them up. In his opinion the British police wouldn't have 30 detectives on this case if they thought it was an abduction by foreigners but would for a murder by British parents on a British child. He also reckons the decision by the Portuguese, not to proceed, was mainly financial and nothing to do with their belief in the parents innocence. This new investigation has cost £2 million, so far, and there's been no arrest or trial. The cost of a trial, with the McCann's wealth and high powered lawyers could drag on for years, cost a fortune and fail. They would've had the world's media camping out for months affecting their seriously valuable tourist industry. A huge loss to their finance, pride and reputation if the prosecution failed and zero gain if it was proven. What would they do with the McCanns if found guilty? Lock them up at even more cost? More likely, suck up the cost of the trial etc and, send them to serve their time in the UK where many people would still insist the Portuguese were wrong. There would be an instant appeal and a retrial at even more cost. The Portuguese simply said they didn't have enough evidence to go to court so just handed over the evidence and allowed the British to take it on. They'd already sussed how everything they said would be doubted and countered by the McCann's team of lawyers. Everything in bold is his words, or the crack from round his station's camp fire, but I can certainly see how it could be true.
But Smug, why has it taken this length of time? (Sorry if this has already been covered but I haven't kept up to speed on this thread) x
The investigation. All these years and now they up the pace / concentrate more on the McCann's? It seems to me that if they didn't want to keep it as high profile (the McC's I mean) as it still is, IF they are culpable, then it wouldn't be heard of now. Off at a tangent, look at the case of the army guy's daughter that disappeared in Germany - its scarcely mentioned now. Look at the chef lass in York - hardly a mention. What I'm trying to say is it is the McCann's keeping this high profile. x
I'll be honest mate, I'm baffled by all of this. There are 30 'elite detectives' on this case including 6 based in Faro. It's cost £2 million so far and, after all of that work, there is no new evidence and no new witnesses. The best brains of the British police have a 'totally new theory' ...... the girl was kidnapped!
Well I never saw the programme but everytime I see the McCann's on the news all I ever hear them say is for the public to stay with them & talking of suing anybody who dares speak out against them. Where does the money come from to keep suing folk? The Maddie fund, a lot of which was public donations? And another thing, have they ever took responsibility for their own actions in leaving such young bairns alone in the first place? Not that I've ever heard & IMO they're as culpable as anyone for what happened.
How can they sue anyone? I say here and now a) they left the bairns on their own b) it wasn't the first time c) they didn't lock the door They are bad parents. They won't sue - because that opens a whole can of worms. x
But it is completely their fault. I'm not saying they are guilty of murder or abduction but it is totally their fault that it happened.
It's just like the Liverpool supporters at Hillsboro ....... no one pushes, no one dies. Don't leave your tiny children alone at night in a foreign country and nowt happens. Don't play with fires and blame the flames when you get burnt.
They just seem so blase as to their own responsibility don't they? Two supposedly well educated people regularly sedating their children & leaving them alone on a regular basis. Why the hell haven't they been done for this?
I'm always watching for those outside influences ......... bsatrads, sneaking up when you least expect them!!!!!!!!!!!
