When I say 'no direction' I mean that passing the ball to a wingman who then makes little or no progress so passes it back to a defender who then passes it across field to another defender who then passes it to the wingman on the other side. This wingman then does exactly the same and so it goes on. Valencia did little or nothing, rarely took on his marker and seemed satisfied in forcing a corner when he did venture up field. This is the current way of playing football but it is far from attractive and results in the 'closing down' tactic from the opposition. The team are obviously under instructions from their Manager. There doesn't appear to be any Ryan Giggs' who didn't wait to be 'closed down' but would take the ball to his marker and beat him (and anyone else who came at him) and would then either take the shot himself or lay the ball on for his strikers. Neither Rooney nor Van Persie got anywhere near that service and were therefore ineffective.
