Plus you're unlikely to be killed by any one of loads of poisonous creatures. Or drink in bars surrounded by gobshite Aussies or of course listen to people banging on about how awesome it is where they live whilst also being homesick and talking of the old country.

Yeah, you deffo win mate. Gday.

I agree about Beverley, horrid people there though if you like eating out then there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance of the town centre. Beverley is full of snobs from top to bottom to the extent they have a council ghetto behind a railway line away from the posh folks. The people on the council estates ( with a few exceptions) are the best people in Beverley. The amount of times I would have to travel out of Beverley to Hull to get things that i needed was also a complete pain, happy now living in one of the West Hull villages with decent facilities/transport on my doorstep.

No, I'm not being silly. People leave Hull to live in surrounding villages and daft sods on various forums and in HDM say they shouldn't be allowed into Hull or to enter the stadium which belongs to Hull people. They are snobs who should be allowed nothing to do with Hull or allowed an opinion on Hull City. Win a TV competition after moving away and you are still a Hull lass.

We're in our 50's and after owning a successful business for 10 years it was time for a new chapter whilst we are still young enough. We weren't pushed into making that decision unlike many others.
The weather in Florida and life style was great but with a mixture of high cost health care insurance, no way of legally retiring, ****ty employees and many other factors ( including wanting to see city play and not depending on TV coverage ) we moved on.
Many of our friends in the US have lost everything and are very bitter about the American Dream that they were promised only to see it disappear. Unfortunately the world recession didn't do many any favours.
I'm sure Australia is a great place to live but so is Hull.
Anyway arrived today in Hull pissing down but managed to have a good drive around despite the weather and the schools kicking out it was a positive start to our visit. I'm leaning towards the Avenues but the other half likes the look of Hessle ( which wasn't on our original list ). Her only concern is the possibility of flooding from the Humber.
Again thanks for al the replies.

Our lass is from Bev and many of our shared friends , all are pretty sound to me .
The only nobheads ive known are all from two streets behind Swinemoor and one off Model Hill farm estate is it still called that ??

The whole problem is that when we were younger everyone was into our business , it was quite wierd for me coming from Hull , where i didnt even know everyone in my year at school lol

The low lying areas in hessle are more at risk of flooding but if you look towards hessle high school area its pretty high up! Have you thought about barton? Get more for your money there and you can pretend it's San fransisco :)

Probably in for some stick now but Barton ain't to bad, ok yeah it's across the bridge, but there is bus to kc on match days, the pubs here are ok, there is great restaurant called the stables, there is a visitor centre which is on the marshes which is great for walking dogs. There is a kids park with huge fields and leisure centre there, couple of super markets and the house prices are cheap as. But then it is Barton!!!

Apparently Hessle foreshore is good for dog walking too.

    So Stan Collymore says.

This would make a great house and it's a snip at £145k, the location isn't great though, hell of a walk to the Avenues...

I live in Traralgon, Victoria mate, about 200 kms east of Melbourne. We have no crocodiles, no Wolf Creek, Dame Edna has retired (thank Gawd), no alcoes, no Dingoes or 'shrimps' (we do have King Prawns about the size of your hand) and whereas Australia in general is prone to bush fires we are pretty clear in our area. I have modified my home with Aluminum Windows all round. I bought it 12 years ago from my 'pay-out' when I was sacked just before I was due to retire. It cost me 56,000 Aus/Dollars - just over 30,000 quid. It is now worth 160,000 dollars - 86,000 quid. Very small (10 squares) 40 feet x 25 feet on land 66 feet x 160 feet, 3 bedrooms (en-suite in main bedroom) living room. dining room, laundrette and kitchenette. Brick Garage (16 feet square) and covered barbecue/dining area at back plus work shop. Plenty of room for the "Child-Bride" and myself. Our dog died 2 years ago but we have 2 Birman cats.
We also have a beautiful climate to which Hull couldn't come close to.
No, I miss the old day's, memories, friends (just about all gone now) and City on a Saturday afternoon but this is what I worked my @rse off for and am more than happy.

Relatively young yet then. I would presume that you made enough money to retire and are self funded. I do understand the 'American Dream' disappearing down the gurgler as we had a similar 'Land of Milk and Honey" syndrome which began to fall apart when successive governments in the 60's and 70's decided to fix what wasn't broken - from 10 jobs for every person it went to 10 people for every job. I believe the Newland Avenue area (where I was born and was brought up and which had (from memory) Lambton Club, Mayfair Club, Piper Club, Grafton and there was a DeGrey Street Club) now has a Boutique Bar for every person who lives there.
I wish you well my friend and hope you find what you are looking for.

So the selling points for Barton are that it has a restaurant, some shops and a park.

    I'm sold.

Beverley born and bred, though moved to west yorkshire for work a couple of years ago.

It's a brilliant town to live in with hull on the door step for nights out, shopping etc.

    I'd recommend it to anyone.
