My thoughts exactly. I'm sure if Bayern had won this wouldn't have been raised by Blatter, based on previous experience of the governing body's apparentl dislike of English teams.
The game goes down to 6 or 7 a side and both teams get to choose the six or seven players that they want to play against in extra time. If that doesn't work then stick with pens. Interesting that this has come up after the Champions League final, obviously the English team winning wasn't to Platini or Blatters liking.
I don't think golden goal really worked. From my recollection neither team tried to attack in extra time, and played for penalties (which they had practiced). The only time I can remember it bring about a result was the Germany v Czech Republic match??
IT is a bit odd that Blatter asks Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative when an English side beats a German side at pen' I kinda like the idea of the way Ice Hockey pens are taken - or even say grass hockeys Penalty corner (in either case the number of players needs to be cut down to 3-5) the only problem with any extra players is going to be the unsightly mess of bodies flying to the floor everywhere feigning injury and foul
The main issue with Golden / Silver goal was crowd safety. It was a huge issue for security and stewarding not knowing precisely when the fans would be leaving ie you get a sudden stampede from thousands of pissed-off fans to the exits without warning.
well whatever they try fails, wasn't the point of the golden goal the same attempt to change the rules and have something "fairer"? I'm not sure it's so much because chelsea beat bayern but because a team that played ****, got dominated throughout the game ended up winning.
Carry on playing, every 5 minutes a player from each team has to leave the field, as there's gradually less players, there'll be more space and someone will have to score, by the time it reaches 3 vs 3 there'll be shots from the halfway line and everything!
How about in extra time both teams have to remove 2 players every 5 minutes. After 5 minutes it would be 9 a side, after 10 minutes 7 a side etc. Might be a daft idea but would certainly be interesting tactically. What would you do take off a striker and a defender after 5 minutes or a couple of midfielders. I think I would pull me wingers first then play through the middle wooooah Airlie tiger had the same idea did'nt see that great minds think alike!
But when neither team tried to attack and both played for pens that's not so much of an issue. And with the silver goal security would know that pissed off crowds would be leaving at either the end of one of the extra time halves, or after pens. The Irish will take off their keeper first
I hate penalities because alot of teams play for them and you get boring games. I can think of a few alternatives. 15 minutes of extra time that goes on until somebody wins is the obvious way. Of course more subs should be allowed because the players will get too tired. Can't see the point of having all those players sat down doing nothing. Other ideas could include removing the goalkeepers in extra time and replacing them with an outfield player, thus encouraging more chances of goals. Or a boxing style judging system. Who deserves to win the match ! - nobody would have picked Chelsea lol !
Cricket have their version which is pick 5 bowlers each, they have a free bowl at the wickets and see who hits them most (sudden death after that). Football could do a 40 yard shot or something. Ice Hockey have their version where it's one player versus keeper, start at one end and you're free to move where you want and take your shot anytime (within a time limit i think). NFL has overtime where its golden goal until someone scores. There's a 15 minute limit and if after that nobody scores they restart the 15 minutes again (coin toss and all) the rules have changed slightly for this season but the changes aren't applicable for soccer emoticon-0136-giggl) anyway They're all i can think of without doing any research (i'm hungover & lazy). though i don't see how any of them are more or less of a lottery than penalties. Typical of Blatter that this comes out after an English team wins a shootout though!
Maybe they should resurrect the 'eye of a tiger' that they had for halftime entertainment at Boothferry park? Then, as an added incentive as well as winning the world cup you could always win £50 as well.
