Maybe you should take some time out and read about the history of our city. You may well be surprised at how much culture we've got and had. Maybe not as much as some but certainly a lot more than most people think.
Well done to all involved in the bid. After all the media put downs that we've had to suffer for far too long this feels like a great victory, and confirmation of what we already knew, that Hull is indeed one of the great Cities of England. Nice comments Fosse, thank you.
PLT - how can you not have seen Bullseye - it is on Challenge TV quite often. Watched the announcement on BBC Breakfast and honestly I was expecting Ms Millar to say Leicester (just like when the Olympics was announced and I expected Paris to get it instead of London. We all know there will be the snidey comments and reports in the papers tomorrow, and Call Me Dave's answer was very well-prepared (and that is the best I will give him) - but I think I stand as much chance of getting to be MP in Hull (standing as Mostyn the Cat) as a tory has. Finally for the time being, I'll have to get round to visiting The Ferens Art Gallery (wonder how many visitors they have had today) at some point
Swansea losing speech.....'there was nothing wrong with the bid, I guess Hull's bid was just stronger than ours, the people of Hull have to have something to look forward to' The green eyed monster is alive and well
Maureen Lipman says it won't spoil Hull; won't go to people's heads. "They'll still talk of furn curls" she said. She also said (in Hull accent): "If you're so bloody good, how come you're here?"
Reports also suggest that Swansea were so cock sure of winning that they had already spent money on the town hall and so for. Oh dear....Lol.
A message from our predecessors: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/city-culture-good-luck-hull-6322771?
I think that describing the event as the City of Culture 2017 is actually rather common. I mean, look at who has held the title before Londonderry. Nothing but common, common common people and the way they talk ekkkkkk, so its a no, no, no from me I am certain no good will come of it. I know because I am a businessman first and foremost .and I know a thing or to about culture. What you need to make this a success is a catchy brand name. Something that captures the essence of the area without it being common. Ah ha I have it!!! Tigers2017, short, marketable, attractive to investors. Now they will instantly link this brand, to success and culture. My market research shows me that Tigers2017 is by far the most popular name for any year of culture. I dont need to see the figures, all I know is that there are only around 200 who are opposed to Tigers2017 and the vast majority support me as everyone already knows the history of the name Tigers and the date changes all of the time anyway so why get upset.
Just heard the great news from my son in England. WELL DONE to everyone involved and so happy for the people of Hull where my family have lived for hundreds of years. I'm very proud of the city where I was born and everything it has accomplished to rise from the ashes of WW II.
Not long in from work and the whole day, well from 7:45am has been one of slight shock, total bemusement and the usual downbeat comments deriding anything good that might come from all of this. On top of this has been delight, but now the dust is beginning to settle the reality is that Hull has a chance. A chance to right all the wrongs the media have showered on Hull, as a city, its people, its geography whilst at the same time rubbing their hands in glee at any unsavoury happenings for them to report on. This is the first real positive plus for the city that hasn't been accompanied by some snide remark of a downside, maybe that will come soon enough but I won't forget the fact that having got to the Premier League the first time we held on only by Newcastle losing their last game, and the insinuation was that we were not really a proper Premier League club like Newcastle. The easier part is over, now Hull has to deliver so as not to give all those who are waiting, and there are many even from Hull, to jump on the usual bandwagon of sneers, derision, gloating, and much more. But for the moment well done to all those who made this judgement possible, on a personal level I just hope I am around long enough to see a very successful conclusion to this honour before we pass it on to someone else. Now what we need to make this all the sweeter is definite announcements on both the Castle Street upgrade and that Siemens is definitely going ahead with its plans for Hull the silence has been going on for too long. Remember we are now City Of Culture 2017, the infrastructure will have to improve to capitalise on that so those 2 long delayed announcements could help start the ball rolling, what about it Siemens and Her Majesty's Government?
